Vishoka Meditation: The Yoga of Inner Radiance is available on Audible now by @himalayan_institute

What if savasana isn’t the end of the practice, but the doorway?

This week, we welcome @ishan_tigunait of the @himalayan_institute to the AYC Member Education series for a free, live workshop:

Teaching from Stillness: Bringing Yogic Meditation into Your Classes

📅 Wednesday, November 4
⏰ 1–2 PM ET
💻 Live online + free to attend

Meditation is part of yoga’s own tradition, yet many students leave class to find it somewhere else. Ishan will explore how meditation grows naturally out of a yoga practice, simple ways to bring it into your classes, and why your own practice is the foundation for guiding others. We’ll close together with a short guided Vishoka Meditation® practice.

Whether you already end class with stillness or have never taught meditation, you’ll leave with a clear place to begin.

The systematic anchoring of the mind in specific points in the body is deeply rejuvenating and restores the capacity for mental focus,
emotional stability, and a tension-free body. Strengthening the mind-body connection necessary for meditation, this practice is a
favorite with yoga practitioners. The actual guided practice takes around 10 min. Comment 61 for a free downloadable audio version of this classical guided practice by our very own @aaronluburich

The wheel of karma has three distinct components: the thought (vritti) that propels the action; the impression (samskara) created by that thought and the ensuing action; and the next round (chakra) of action propelled by the samskara. Thus, another name for the wheel of karma is vritti samskara chakra. This concept is the ground for
understanding the law of karma. If we take a closer look at how we create our personal wheel of karma, we will begin to see what a profound effect it has on all aspects of our lives.

"In Self realization -Samadhi, the highest state of yogic accomplishment, you are fully at peace. You are perfectly established in supreme consciousness. The experience
of equanimity you gain at this stage cannot be compared with anything else. It is indescribable. The experience of bliss is not outside you;
it is inside you and it is you. "

The mind lies at the center of our personal world. It is an extension of mahat tattva, an immense field of intelligence pulsating
with creativity. The mind, which is as pure and luminous as mahat tattva, is a gift from primordial prakriti. The mind is designed to unveil its own essential nature as well as the essential nature of pure consciousness, but it has lost much of its self-revealing capacity because it has become cluttered by innumerable samskaras. In this sutra, Patanjali tells us how to reclaim the mind’s self-revealing capacity and thus become established in
our essential nature.

Here Patanjali describes the result of samyama on udana, the function of prana shakti characterized by upward movement, elevation, elation, uplifting feelings, and an upward pull. According to Vyasa, the domain of udana shakti extends from the lowest part of the body all the way to our head. Taking this a step further, scriptures such as the Yoga Vashishtha and Svacchanda Tantra tell us the domain of udana is the same as that of prana shakti, which pervades every nook and cranny of the body including the dvadashanta, the twelve-finger-width space surrounding the body. The upward pull or push and the uplifting feelings and experiences in this space are functions of udana. By practicing samyama on this dimension of prana shakti, we are able to pull our awareness from the lower part of the body, direct it to the crown, push it through the fontanelle during the final transition, and enter the higher reaches of the space of consciousness known as the sahasrara chakra.

According to this sutra, mastery over udana shakti enables us to remain unaffected by the obstructions caused by water, mud, and thorns. This refers to the imbalances caused by the five elements that constitute our body. At the time of death, the body is subject to numberless factors, the majority of which are beyond our comprehension. Disease, old age, toxins, and the unpredictable emotional havoc associated with dying throw our bodily fluids out of balance. Yogis call this “drowning in water.” Too little or too many minerals and hormones starve or clog our vital organs. In yogic terminology, this is “becoming stuck in mud.” Similarly, the nervous system’s response to the pain of dying is referred to as “being pricked by thorns.” Mastery over udana shakti enables us to push our way up through these conditions during our final departure. Gaining this mastery is particularly useful in parakaya pravesha, both when we are getting out of our own body and when we are entering another body... #sutra #YogicWisdom #tradition by @himalayan_institute

sutras 2:12 and 2:13, Patanjali and Vyasa tell us our current life is the result of karmas performed in previous lives. In other words, our present is the product of our past—our current pleasant and unpleasant circumstances are the result of our previous actions. Some of these current circumstances are avoidable while others are not. Our adrishta-janma-vedaniya karmashaya, the reservoir of karmas to be experienced in unseen lives, guides us to take birth in a particular place at a particular time. These karmas are the building blocks of our destiny—the pain or pleasure resulting from them is unavoidable. When we are in our mother’s womb, for example, we cannot avoid being affected by her habits. But we do have a choice in regard to other experiences and circumstances. Patanjali calls these experiences heyam, avoidable. Actions that have not begun bearing fruit can—with effort and wisdom—be nullified. A simple example is avoiding the ill effects of poisonous food with a quickly administered antidote; the longer we wait, the less likely it is we will avoid being harmed. Or to give a more complex example: some of us are predominately vatic—nervous, unstable, and easily stressed—and therefore prone to hypertension, high blood pressure, and heart failure. These conditions can be avoided by adopting a vata-calming lifestyle: eating nourishing food, balancing the functions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, and calming the autonomic nervous system with regular breathing exercises. These practices can be further strengthened with meditation and contemplative techniques, thereby avoiding many of the deleterious effects of a vata imbalance. According to yoga, most of our sorrowful conditions are due to sheer carelessness. When an afflicting condition gains so much momentum that it becomes overtly painful, we look for a cure. At other times, we are so preoccupied by the demands of our self-identity, attachment, aversion, and fear that we fail to notice we have a problem. Pain warns us that the sap of life is draining away and we must do something to stop it. If we heed this warning, we can overcome the pain and eliminate the subtle conditions that ar by @himalayan_institute

Dear Maha Sri Yagis and Sri Suktis,

May the Divine Mother continue showering Her blessings upon you for what you have done and for what you are doing. Without your participation and the sincere effort you put into your practice, the Maha Sri Yaga (MSY) would not have been possible.

Now we are about to conclude the final step of Maha Sri Yaga, which will take place during its concluding session, October 9–23. This step is marked by a uniquely distinctive practice, Vasudhara, which will take place at 4:30 pm Eastern Time on October 22nd.

Those of you who were in Khajuraho for Session 6 of MSY have already experienced Vasudhara. At that time, the practice followed the kaula tradition of tantra, whereas in October it will be an internal practice according to the samaya school of tantra, which is the heart and soul of the Himalayan Tradition.

With this letter, I invite you to join me online in this unique practice, so that together we conclude the Maha Sri Yaga that we, as a group, began a year ago.

This samaya-oriented practice of Vasudhara is only for Maha Sri Yagis and Sri Suktis like you. It is approximately 25–30 minutes long and will be held in the Sri Vidya shrine. The offerings are made in our internal fire at the sahasrara, the crown chakra. I will mantrically ignite the fire within all of us. All you have to do is bring the sticks of your love and sincerity, pour the ghee of your bhakti into the fire of our inner intelligence, and bask in its light of wisdom and compassion.

To help you understand the deeper implications of the Vasudhara practice, especially the internal fire offering made with the Vasudhara mantras, I produced—just for you—a video on this subject, Vasudhara – Bathing in the Stream of Inner Wealth. Please view this video more than once, and reflect on it as deeply as you can to fully digest it.

Remember, this final portion of MSY (the internal Vasudhara fire offering) marks the arrival of a new and exciting era in the teachings of the Sages—the closing of an era that lasted until a few years ago, and the opening of one now emerging.
