Our historical map of Brecon and Hay-on-Wye is out now, celebrating two Welsh Marcher towns shaped by Norman settlement, border warfare and centuries of commercial and civic life.

With launches at Hay Castle and Brecon’s historic Guild Hall, the map has already sparked strong local interest. A Welsh-language edition is also in preparation. by @hist_towns

Our recent conference with the Yorkshire Archaeology & Historical Society brought together historians, archaeologists and heritage researchers to explore how Yorkshire’s towns have changed over the centuries.

From Roman settlements and medieval York, to Scarborough’s transformation into a seaside resort, the talks demonstrated how maps, archaeology and other historical sources can reveal the changing character of our towns. by @hist_towns

🗺️ Imagine walking through the streets of London with Samuel Pepys as your guide.

We’re incredibly excited to announce Samuel Pepys’ London, a new historical map from the Historic Towns Trust that will bring Restoration London vividly to life.

Based on our forthcoming Atlas of London on the Eve of the Great Fire, the map will allow you to explore the city as Pepys knew it in 1666: following his journeys, discovering the places he wrote about and seeing the extraordinary city that stood on the brink of transformation.

From St Paul’s Cathedral and the Royal Exchange to theatres, taverns, coffee houses and the bustling River Thames, Pepys’ diary offers an unparalleled window onto everyday life in Restoration London.

He witnessed the coronation of Charles II, the Great Plague and the Great Fire. Now we want to use his remarkable diary to create a map that lets everyone explore his London for themselves.

💛 Help us bring Pepys’ London to life

We’ve launched a crowdfunding appeal to help fund the cartography, design and production of the map.

🎁 Donate £12 or more and you’ll receive a code for a free copy of the map when it is published, currently planned for winter 2027.*

Whether you're fascinated by history, London, cartography or Pepys himself, we'd love you to be part of creating this unique educational resource.

As I write my next story, I am studying this map of 13th century, London. It was published by The Historic Towns Trust and is a treasure! The bold red line is the Roman wall with Saint Bartholomew’s Priory just north of it and the crowded city streets of London just south. Incredibly, St. Bartholomew’s has survived the centuries and is an active church today. See the surreptitious picture of a contemporary service with clouds of medieval incense.
