King Charles I died 377 years ago on January 30, 1649, when he was beheaded outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall.

Charles believed in the “Divine Right of Kings,” meaning he thought God gave him the absolute power to rule. He locked Parliament out for 11 years and ruled entirely by himself.

To pay for his government without Parliament’s approval, he forced citizens to pay unlawful taxes, like “Ship Money,” which made the people furious.

When Parliament finally fought back, Charles raised an army. This started a massive war that killed about 200,000 people. Even after losing the first war, Charles secretly asked the Scots to invade England to help him win back total control. Parliament viewed this as a betrayal of his own kingdom.

Parliament tried to negotiate with Charles many times. He refused to give up any power and kept trying to spark new conflicts. Parliament decided the only way to get peace was to get rid of him. They officially labeled him a tyrant, traitor, murderer, and public enemy.

On the bitterly cold morning of his execution, King Charles I specifically requested to wear two shirts so he would not shiver from the cold. He was worried that if the crowd saw him shaking, they would mistake it for fear. He famously stated, “I fear not death!”.

Both shirts survive due to royalist supporters preserving their Kings existence. One of them survives and resides at Longleat Estate.

I’m so tired of this misinformation. Unfortunately, Charlotte is not black, or POC like in Bridgerton.

This was a theory from the 1990s that still it seems, has people believing it.

King George III’s grandparents:

Caroline and George:

An intelligent and attractive woman, Caroline was much sought after as a bride. Dowager Electress Sophia and British diplomat Edmund Poley both called her “the most agreeable Princess in Germany”.

She was considered for the hand of Archduke Charles of Austria, who was a candidate for the throne of Spain and later became Holy Roman Emperor. Charles made official overtures to her in 1703, and the match was encouraged by King Frederick of Prussia. After some consideration, Caroline refused in 1704, as she would not convert from Lutheranism to Catholicism.

Early in the following year, Queen Sophia Charlotte died on a visit to her native Hanover. Caroline was devastated, writing to Leibniz, “The calamity has overwhelmed me with grief and sickness, and it is only the hope that I may soon follow her that consoles me.”

In June 1705, Sophia Charlotte’s nephew Prince George Augustus of Hanover visited the Ansbach court, supposedly incognito, to inspect Caroline, as his father the Elector did not want his son to enter into a loveless arranged marriage as he himself had.

The nephew of three childless uncles, George Augustus was under pressure to marry and father an heir to prevent endangering the Hanoverian succession.

He had heard reports of Caroline’s “incomparable beauty and mental attributes”. He immediately took a liking to her “good character” and the British envoy reported that George Augustus “would not think of anybody else after her”.

For her part, Caroline was not fooled by the prince’s disguise, and found her suitor attractive.

On 22 August 1705, Caroline arrived in Hanover for her wedding to George Augustus; they were married that evening in the palace chapel at Herrenhausen. By May of the next year, she was pregnant, and her first child Prince Frederick was born on 20 January 1707.

They had nine children together and were married for 32 years.

King Henry VIII of England’s weight dramatically increased, from around 15 stone (210 lbs) as a young, athletic king to approximately 28 stone (nearly 400 lbs or 180 kg) by his death in 1547, with his waist expanding from about 32 inches to over 50 inches, largely due to inactivity from severe jousting injuries and rich diets.

A severe accident in 1536 led to painful, non-healing leg ulcers, drastically reducing his mobility and physical activity.

A love for feasting and an estimated in take of 6,000-8,000 calories per day, contributed to significant weight gain.

He consumed little pies, sugary puddings, fruits, and fine white bread, along with rich sauces made with lard. This lavish diet wasn’t just for sustenance; it was a deliberate display of the monarch’s immense wealth and power.

His inability to joust and hunt, once core activities, meant fewer calories were burned.

If you didn’t know, Henry VIII had six wives:

•Katherine of Aragon🇪🇸 (1485-1536), divorced.
•Anne Boleyn 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿(1501-1536), beheaded.
•Jane Seymour 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿(1508-1537), died.
•Anne of Cleves 🇩🇪(1515-1557), divorced.
•Katherine Howard 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿(1521/24-1542), beheaded.
•Katherine Parr 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿(1512-1548), survived Henry VIII by a year.

it’s impossible to know for certain what Henry VIII felt, historical accounts suggest he may have experienced some regret or nostalgia for his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, after their divorce. Despite his desire for a male heir and his infatuation with Anne Boleyn, Henry did express some sentimental feelings, particularly at Katherine’s death. He was also known to have trusted Katherine and relied on her judgment, even allowing her to act as regent while he was fighting in France.

It’s also noted that Henry sent her some of his shirts to mend. So he missed her skills in sewing.

Lady Jane Grey, often referred to as the 9 day Queen of England is often not remembered by many. Although, some would say that she was technically the second Queen of England after Empress/Queen Matilda. Many would name Mary I as the first Queen of England!

Who would you say was the first Queen of England?

Empress Matilda, Lady Jane Grey or Mary I?

Katherine of Aragon suffered a lot throughout the 23 year marriage she had with Henry VIII, whether that would be his cheating antics or losing all of her children. Yes, Mary I did survive but she was kept away from her mother, Katherine which technically meant that she lost all of her children :(
