POSTS STORIES REELS

This is my second post since I started using Instagram, but with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) being established today, November 2, I decided to repost it to highlight the importance of business continuity planning (BCP). by @hito_hitohi

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to three scientists from the United States and Germany for establishing “optogenetics,” a technique that uses light to control the activity of neurons in the living brain.

In Japan, a joint research group from Keio University and Nagoya Institute of Technology has begun clinical trials of a gene therapy aimed at restoring vision lost due to the intractable eye disease “retinitis pigmentosa,” utilizing the techniques of “optogenetics” to control the activity of nerve cells and other cells using light.

This rare eye disease is a progressive, blinding condition in which the photoreceptor cells of the retina—which line the inner surface of the eye and convert light into nerve signals—are the first to be affected, gradually losing their function. It typically affects one in every 4,000 to 8,000 people, and no definitive cure has yet been established.

CORE POWER

CORE POWER is a startup currently planning and developing a “nuclear-powered ship” for the decarbonization era by utilizing a small nuclear reactor as a marine engine.

Unlike conventional reactors, the company aims to install a next-generation reactor known as a “molten salt fast reactor”—which operates without high pressure and poses an extremely low risk of radioactive leakage—on ships.

The international shipping industry is facing strict regulations requiring net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. While alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia are being developed, nuclear propulsion is being reevaluated as the ultimate clean energy source of the next generation due to its overwhelming advantages: “the ability to sail continuously for 20 to 30 years without refueling” and “the elimination of the need for fuel tanks, allowing for the transport of more cargo at higher speeds.” by @hito_hitohi

It may sound like something out of a science fiction story, but a system that generates electricity in space and transmits it to Earth is set to take a historic step forward in fiscal year 2026 as one of the hottest new technologies.

Overview Energy is developing technology to beam “invisible infrared light” from space to Earth. The company made headlines in 2026 after signing a contract to supply power to Meta’s data centers.

The company is proposing a groundbreaking system that eliminates the need to build massive dedicated antennas on the ground; instead, it simply directs infrared light onto “existing solar power plants already on the ground” to generate electricity. The company aims to conduct an in-orbit demonstration in 2028 and begin commercial operations in 2030. by @hito_hitohi

Selenoneine is a powerful antioxidant found in high concentrations in the “bloodline” of red-fleshed fish such as tuna. It is said to have an antioxidant effect capacity approximately 500 times greater than that of vitamin E, and is expected to offer health benefits and help prevent pre-disease conditions, including the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, stress reduction, and anti-aging.

Until now, it was believed that refining 1 gram of this substance for use in supplements cost about 1 million yen, but since it has been discovered to be abundant in tuna bloodline, it is now possible to bring it to market at a lower cost. by @hito_hitohi

A research team at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has become the first in the world to successfully perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a live pig using two commercially available humanoid robots, the “Unitree G1.” This achievement is drawing attention as a potential solution for providing medical care in remote areas facing severe surgeon shortages and in space.

In Japan, there is growing interest in how much of an actual surgical procedure can be performed using only inexpensive, commercially available general-purpose robots costing around $20,000, as an alternative to specialized surgical assistance robots that cost over 300 million yen. by @hito_hitohi

A research team at Osaka Public University has begun clinical trials of “Histotripsy,” a groundbreaking new treatment that destroys liver cancer cells using powerful ultrasound waves—without the use of scalpels or needles.

Using a specialized device, high-pressure ultrasound waves are precisely directed from outside the body at tumors in the liver.

The main features of this treatment are that it “places an extremely low burden on the body,” “has no side effects,” and “dramatically shortens the hospital stay.”

The liver is often referred to as the “silent organ.”In other words, because noticeable symptoms rarely appear, liver cancer tends to be detected late. Furthermore, since it is a cancer with a low survival rate, there is strong demand for early coverage under health insurance. by @hito_hitohi
