If I Leave/Desert Song - @maro.musica & @sajevoices

Five years ago, on June 8th, 2018, my sister and best friend, Faustine, died by suicide. Some days it is easy to accept. On others, it is inconceivable that I’ve lived this long without her. Her life and her death has been my greatest teacher in life thus far. It was the doorway in which I discovered myself, in all the pain and the beauty. To be vulnerable with myself, to find strength and comfort in the truth that everything is temporary. That is what makes life precious. It’s taken so much growth to come to find gratitude for this experience. I wouldn’t be who I am today without it, and I know everyone who meets me now, is meeting her. She lives through me; it is an honor to carry her spirit and memory.

Yet, I struggle to accept that it’s been five years. And so, I decided to create this testimony, to use these beautiful songs as a passage to feel connected to her, and mostly myself. I hope you enjoy my perspective on these two songs. And please, listen with headphones!

Lyrics:
If I leave, I’ll leave this song behind.
Not for all, but for those who cry.
If I leave, it’s not ‘cause I don’t care.
There’s too much that I feel I couldn’t bear.
Please remember the times I smiled for you.
But forgive me. There is nothing left.

I bet when you see the ocean,
you’re drawn to the strength inside the waves.
But if you get caught within the ocean,
the undertow will let you lose your way.
I bet when you reach the ocean,
can’t wait to sink your toes into the sand.
Instead you will sink into the ocean,
and watch your heart pulled slowly from your hands.

A couple weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to be a featured performer at the American Indian College Fund’s Epicurean Award to Support Scholars fundraiser banquet in New York City. It was heartwarming to honor the two amazing founders of the AICF, for their almost 40 years of service to helping Indigenous students like me.

I love being able to represent MHA nation, along with my wonderful mother @indigenia , the president of Nueta, Hiraaca, Sahnish College. Shoutout to @crazy_bull for beading these beautiful earrings, @isawelk for the video, and @korinaemmerich for ur cute doggy ^_^ by @hoba.wea
