Dog training that looks like real life & feels like PLAY!

Reactive dogs don’t need us to just tell them what NOT to do. They need us to teach them what TO do.

For me, that starts with building a relationship, creating engagement, and using play to help the dog make better choices.

We’re not just trying to stop the barking, lunging, or pulling. We’re teaching the dog how to handle the world around them without feeling like they need to react to everything.

The goal isn’t a dog that never reacts. It’s a dog that has the skills to make better choices when things get difficult.

Less reacting. More thinking. More freedom.

Hey, I’m Joe. 👋

I’m a former Army Ranger, Art School Drop out, IGP competitor and owner of Hodge Canine.

For me, dog training has never been about just getting a dog to sit, stay, or heel. Building a dog that is confident and clear is always the goal.

I believe attitude matters more than perfection. That building games are the best way to teach and train. And that training shouldn’t just produce obedience, it should allow dogs to live a fuller life.

If you want to understand your dog better, build a stronger relationship, and see what’s possible through training, give me a follow.

Dog training should look like real life and feel like play.

Welcome to Hodge Canine. 🤘

A good walk is about more than just walking. 🐾

Look at the attitude here. Eyes up, engaged, and genuinely enjoying the process.

This is what I want to see in training. Not a dog simply going through the motions, but one that’s actively choosing to participate.

Build the engagement. Reinforce the choices. Develop the understanding.

Precision can come later. First, build a dog that loves working with you.

Dog training should look like real life and feel like play.

A box, some food, and a game your dog will f*cking love. 📦

Box feeding starts with a simple idea: There’s food in this thing!

Before adding challenges, build their understanding. Give them a clear signal that the game is available, make it easy to win, and let them discover why sticking their head in that box is worth doing.

We want a dog who chooses to participate—and keeps coming back for more.

Build the value. Develop the understanding. Then build on it.

Good obedience isn’t just about what your dog can do. It’s about where they can do it.

It’s one thing to have a dog that listens in your living room or backyard. It’s another to take those same skills into the real world, where distractions, unfamiliar environments, and new challenges are part of the picture.

That’s why we don’t stop when a dog understands a behavior.

We take that understanding and build on it through different environments, distractions, and expectations.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s a dog that understands what’s being asked, feels confident doing it, and can make good choices wherever life takes them.

Dog training should look like real life and feel like play.

Dog training should look like real life and feel like play.

That’s not just a catchy phrase. It’s the foundation of how I approach training.

I want dogs that are engaged, confident, and enthusiastic about what they’re doing. Dogs that understand what’s expected of them, but also genuinely enjoy the process.

Because good training isn’t just about teaching behaviors or getting a dog to follow commands.

It’s about building attitude, developing understanding, creating clarity, and giving dogs opportunities to overcome challenges.

The work should be intentional. The expectations should be clear. And the process should be something both you and your dog look forward to.

Take the training seriously. Don’t forget to have fun doing it.

Back to the basics with Lucky as we start preparing for our IGP trial in December.

We’re going back and rebuilding the foundation of our jumps, making sure the attitude, understanding, and confidence are there before we start asking for more.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in dog training is rushing through the fundamentals because you’re eager to get to the finished product.

But the quality of your foundation determines how far you can take your training.

When something starts to fall apart, the answer isn’t always to push harder or demand more precision. Sometimes it’s about going back, breaking things down, and making sure the dog truly understands what’s being asked.

And just because a dog can perform a behavior doesn’t mean there isn’t room to improve the foundation underneath it.

I don’t care how advanced the dog is. There’s always value in going back to the basics.

Build the attitude. Develop the understanding. Then ask for precision.

Feelin’ that autumn air? 🍂 🐾 by @hodgecanine

Impulse control isn’t about teaching your dog to do nothing. It’s about teaching them to make better choices when they want to do something else.

It’s easy for a dog to listen when there’s nothing competing for their attention.

But what happens when they’re excited? Frustrated? When there’s something they really want?

That’s where the real training happens.

We want dogs that can experience excitement without losing their minds. Dogs that can handle frustration without immediately reacting. Dogs that learn their choices have consequences.

And we don’t build that by constantly avoiding distractions or removing every challenge.

We build it by creating opportunities for dogs to experience those emotions, work through them, and discover that making the right choice pays off.

The goal isn’t to eliminate excitement. It’s to teach dogs how to think through it.

That’s impulse control that actually carries over into everyday life.

Your walk should be more than just exercise.

Walking your dog isn’t just about getting steps in or burning off energy. It’s an opportunity to train for real life.

Every walk gives you a chance to build communication, reinforce good choices, introduce new experiences, and teach your dog how to navigate the world around them.

But here’s the thing. Not every second of your walk needs to be obedience.

Give your dog opportunities to explore. Let them sniff. Let them enjoy some freedom. Then bring them back into work when you need to.

The goal isn’t a dog that walks perfectly beside you for 30 minutes.

It’s a dog that understands when it’s time to work, when it’s time to explore, and how to transition between the two.

Structure creates freedom. And freedom makes the walk worth having.

Play is the best form of learning.

Play is so much more than just having fun with your dog. It’s an opportunity to build communication, develop confidence, create engagement, and teach your dog how to work through challenges.

When a dog is genuinely invested in what you’re doing together, learning becomes something they WANT to participate in rather than something they HAVE to do.

Through play, we can teach dogs how to make choices, handle frustration, respond to pressure, and work with us. All while building a relationship that carries over into everyday life.

And here’s the best part. Your dog doesn’t even realize how much they’re learning.

Don’t get so caught up in teaching obedience that you forget to PLAY.

Dog training should look like real life and feel like play.
