7 Smart Ways to Preserve Food for the Long Term Want to make your food last longer and cut down on waste? Here are 7 reliable methods to keep your food fresh, safe, and shelf-stable: 1. Dehydrating Removes moisture from food to prevent spoilage. Great for fruits, veggies, herbs & jerky! 2. Canning Seals food in jars using heat to kill bacteria. Perfect for jams, sauces, soups & veggies. 3. Mylar Bags Used with oxygen absorbers for long-term dry food storage (rice, beans, oats). Store in cool, dark places. 4. Food-Grade 5-Gallon Buckets Pair with Mylar bags & oxygen absorbers for bulk storage. Keeps out pests & moisture. 5. Freeze-Drying Removes water via sublimation while preserving taste & nutrients. Long shelf life—decades! 6. Vacuum Sealing Removes air to prevent freezer burn & oxidation. Great for meats, veggies, and dry goods. 7. Freezing Simple & effective. Preserves freshness short- to medium-term—ideal for everyday use. Which method do you use most often? Things can be heavy sometimes. It’s okay to escape. Turn off the news. Step away from social media. Focus on what matters! Have a good day! #itsokay #homesteader #womenwhoprep by @hoopeehomestead
Get your house in order! Major US Military Bases are being ordered to maintain strategic stockpiles to carry them for at least 90 days without external civilian support of food, water, fuel, and ammunition, alongside alternative on-site power capabilities. Other countries are encouraging the same. 🤔THOUGHTS? #preparednotscared #getyourhouseinorder #preparedness by @hoopeehomestead
We had just finished up when I snapped this picture of our two Chicken Tractors filled with Meat-birds.🖤 At the end of the day chores still have to be done, but We get to! We were busy away from the homestead today, which leads to a busy evening. …Meat birds got moved out of their brooder into the chicken tractor, which meant adding a larger feeder, their waterer, tarp’ing the chicken tractor, and setting up their heat lamp; Ducks got their big 300 gallon tank drained & pumped onto the Blueberry Bushes and they also got fresh water and feed; eggs were gathered, feed was checked for all chickens; Longhorns and dogs got fed; cats were fed, and the Farm Stand got closed… This is not complaining but sharing a glimpse into our lives as homesteaders. A life that takes determination, grit and in return gives way more back. At times, the “I don’t want to…” sets in but we honestly have so much to be grateful for. We get to feed! We get to close the Farm Stand! We get to raise meat-birds. We get to steward the land. We get to care for our animals… we get to raise and process meat-birds to feed our family. ……….We get to! #homesteadlifestyle #wegetto #homesteady by @hoopeehomestead

Meet Sadie! Sadie joined the homestead herd July 18th. I’ve shared her in stories, but I thought she needed a spot here. She is doing great with Rusty and Sallie. She’s settled in and is a great addition to the Hoopee Homestead. Welcome Sadie!! #longhorncattle🐂🐂 #growbuildraise #homesteader by @hoopeehomestead
We recently purchased 50 lb potatoes from Azure Standard and I’m working towards preserving them. First Up- Frozen French Fries Easy steps. No added preservatives. No salt or seasonings. Just potatoes. Preserve your own food. Cut out the middle man and know what’s in your food. Thanks to Richie & Jenny @growbuildraise for the inspiration. #foodpreserving #homestead #food security by @hoopeehomestead
