Some moments remind you what freedom really feels like. 🦒🐎

The rhythm of hooves on African soil. The open wilderness stretching endlessly ahead. And then, just metres away, a giraffe and her calf moving gracefully through the bush.

No fences between you and the wild. No rush. Just the extraordinary privilege of experiencing nature from the saddle.

This isn’t just riding. It’s being part of something wild.

This was a beautiful evening with Leo, Johnny, Grace and Tamsin riding Rufous, Bafanas, Apollo and Rafael.

Drop us a DM if you’d like details about our horse safaris in South Africa and Botswana. We’d love to hear from you.

Unforgettable horse safari.

If you are looking for an experience which will literally change your life and leave you with indelible memories, then this adventurous horse safari is for you.

It is difficult to explain the exact feelings and emotions you have when you watch a herd of elephant walk past you from the back of your horse, or you ride past a large tower of giraffe and see a leopard cub stalking. Out in the bush, we can’t predict what the animals will be doing, but we can promise it will be astonishing and amazing to watch every time. Being on a horse, brings you much closer to the wildlife, in a way, that you do feel you are part of your surroundings and in some way connected and part of it.

We all have such busy and ‘noisy’ lives these days, and spending 8 days on horseback on safari in South Africa and Botswana, is an incredible way of leaving all that behind and just be quiet and still for a moment. Listening to the crickets, owls, jackals, hyenas and lion roar at night is particularly special too. Our camps are varied and at some we do sleep outside, which also brings you even closer to nature.

I live here in Africa, and yet even when I am out on safari, I find it still makes me feel peaceful and that intimate connection with the wild, brings about an inner calm. For anyone, who is in love with horses, wildlife and wild places, you will love this experience. I’d go as far as to describe it as restorative for your soul. But don’t take my word for it, please come and join us when you can and experience it for yourselves.

Drop me a DM and I’ll happily answer any questions you have and the team will also be in touch with all the details of this wonderful trip.

On safari with Gemma Owen.

Gemma joined us for a week on our African Explorer safari, riding in both South Africa and Botswana.
This is a ‘Big Five’ safari (meaning, you have the chance to see elephants, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo), which has varied topography and game viewing between the two countries, making it quite a unique horse safari experience. We were lucky enough to see 4 of the Big Five on this particular safari, but hopefully that gives Gemma a good reason to come back one day. 😁🐃

To hear what Genma thought of her safari,
watch her vlog on her YouTube channel @gemmaowen9623 (https://youtu.be/Y79jP9rR-d0?si=Z1F_y2pUyU36PGwf).

If you’d like to know more, and would like details about this particular safari, please send us a direct message or email susie@ridinginafrica.com.

Skybreaker leading the herd through the water on the way to the yard for their morning feed.

In South Africa, our horses live out and roam freely on the reserve or in extensive grazing paddocks. They come in twice a day to be fed and checked, and normally bring themselves in.

Heree, they were crossing the spillway of the dam in front of the Horizon lodge en route to the stables. We have over 120 horses in the herd, which is made up of a number of different breeds and cross breeds. Over half the herd are a relatively unknown breed outside of South Africa - the Boerperd. These horses’ original blood stocks were Arab, Andalusian and Hackney. They are very hardy and brave and make the perfect safari horse.

Do come and meet and ride some of our horses when you can.

If you’d like details about our safaris in South Africa or Botswana, please send us a direct message or you can email susie@ridinginafrica.com.

Overnight ride

This is a nice longer ride across the other side of the conservancy. Both buffalo and rhino now roam the plains and it is easy to see them on horseback.
With long, wide sandy tracks, this is also a great place for a fun extended canter.

Stay at a beautifully decorated, Africa-chic lodge, is welcome after the long ride. With comfortable, luxury bedrooms and facilities, including a swimming pool, it is the perfect spot to relax and later to enjoy the night sky from the fire pit.

Intermediate and above riders on either our African Explorer or Signature Safari, can enjoy this overnight experience.

If you’d like details about this, or would like to know more about all our safaris in SouthA Africa and Botswana for novice, intermediate and above riders, please email susie@ridinginafrica.com.

This is what it is like when you come across a herd of elephants in the bush in Botswana. Despite being such big animals, elephants can move through the bush so silently. Often all you can hear are the bushes scrapping against their skin. This herd were moving quite quickly through the bush on their way to the river to drink, when we encountered them from a gully. It is just wonderful to see the horses and the elephants have a good look at each other and then the elephants carry on with their business. Magical moments in the bush.
Lead guide Tsaone.

If you’d like to experience this yourself and would like more information, please send Horizon Horseback a direct message or email susie@ridinginafrica.com. We’d love to take you on safari with us.
