I remember coming across Johnny got his gun and thinking it was a really effective anti-war novel. I was gutted by the denial of Johnny's request to warn the world of what was happening through the macabre exhibition of his own body that he could barely perceive.

And moved as I was by his plight, I wonder if it was a mercy. A mercy both that Dalton Trumbo granted his protagonist and the audience, or Trumbo genuinely thought it would have made a difference.

The reason I think of this now is that we are currently witnessing a constant stream of exactly such macabre sights. People laying bare their deepest grief and tragedies as they are happening to them. Hoping that denying others the luxury of ignorance, and forcing them to bear witness would awaken a sense of some kind of humanity in those who deny it to others.

And yet, I don't know how much of a difference it makes. I sit here far away from it all, not doing nearly enough and I wonder if my words carry any weight or meaning. And even given the context of the post - I wonder if it was vulgar to have been moved so much by fiction, when what's happening is so much worse.
