POSTS STORIES REELS

We've seen transhumanist ideology gain enormous power and money in the past few years. On Your Undivided Attention this week, Alex Thomas gives us a framework for understanding it all: HES.

Hierarchy: a sense of superiority and a fixation on IQ.

Exit: the dream of escaping a depleted world instead of repairing it.

Scale: stories of galactic colonization, immortality, and radical abundance.

Once you know the pattern, you start to see it everywhere.

We’re living through multiple overlapping crises of our own making. Big Tech's answer is simple: keep going.

Keep your foot on the accelerator. Radical abundance, immortality, superintelligence are all just around the corner.

In this week's episode of Your Undivided Attention, Alex Thomas explains why that story is so appealing, and what it lets us avoid: asking where these crises came from in the first place.

There’s an ideology driving the AI race that sees human beings as a defective early draft, that treats this planet as expendable, and that sees the suffering of real people today as a rounding error against a cosmic future.

It goes by many names: transhumanism, techno-optimism, accelerationism. Twenty years ago it was a fringe belief in Silicon Valley. Now, our guest calls it “the most powerful ideological force on the planet.”

On this week’s episode of Your Undivided Attention, @tristanharris sits down with author Alex Thomas to explore and name these ideas so you can spot them in a press statement, manifesto, or carefully worded thread on X. And we discuss how to answer with a pro-human vision for the future — one that embraces the full complexity of our world.

“You won’t tell your therapist. But you’ll tell AI?”

In mid-September, that question alongside a handful of other ads went up across New York City subway cars and stations, with a projected reach of 11 million riders.

Within days, people were photographing the ads and sharing them on their own. One Reddit post has drawn nearly 60,000 upvotes, and popular Instagram and TikTok accounts have shared the campaign with their millions of followers.

In the campaign’s first four weeks:

- 2 million impressions across our digital social campaign
- 100,000 visits to our landing page itsnotyouits.ai, with more than 20% of them from people searching for the campaign directly after seeing it on the subway or online
- Over 1,000 people signed up to stay involved, and nearly 1,500 letters were sent to Congress demanding our legislators make AI companies legally responsible when their products cause harm, ban the manipulative designs that prey on users, and give people control over their own data.

That’s the progression we hoped to create: take a feeling people couldn’t quite name, give them the language to understand it, and help turn that understanding into agency and action.

The posters are up through the end of October. We hope the conversation continues long after they come down.

What happens when we outsource our creativity to AI?

We took that question to the streets of New York, where people shared concerns about a technology being rolled out faster than they can keep up with and what we stand to lose when we hand over creative tasks.

Clarity creates courage. So does caring.

That's why Iceland's President Halla Tómasdóttir tries never to hold a meeting about the future without young people in the room. They care about the future more deeply than anyone.

How much of what we hand to AI could we still do ourselves?

On the streets of New York, people told us they use it for tasks they know they could manage on their own. Once it’s built into everything, switching it off stops being a real option.

After watching The AI Doc, Iceland's President @hallatomas sat in silence for an hour. Then she picked up the phone.

#aidrift #itsnotyouitsai our memories are getting worse and worse and the biggest culprit is our lack of struggling because AI and other tech we use on a daily basis. Visit itsnotyouits.ai to learn how to take back control and keep hold of the skills that make you human! by @humanetech

Iceland's President @hallatomas knows "pause" is a charged word in AI right now. She's using it anyway.

Every spiritual tradition, she points out, has some practice of silence or stepping back, because that's how you make good decisions under pressure.

Applied to AI, her question is simple: if we compete at the expense of everything, including the planet and humanity itself, who wins?

No one.
