I did it! My very first monster pen plot 🤖 🖊️ 1.5m x 1.3m.

Since I began being more serious about pen plotting a few months ago, I’ve been wanting to make a huge pen plot. The problem was my amazing #axidraw only could plot A3. They sold an A1 plotter but even that didn’t seem big enough. And so I needed to go about building my own.

I went large, as large as my studio room could handle, a rig that was 1.5m by 1.5m from @openbuilds. I wired it, tightened screws, learned to 3D print parts, realized I missed some screws that I later found and improved my accuracy. I figured out how to process my SVGs into gcode which makes me feel like some legit coder as I do it from within the terminal on my Mac 🤓 This drawing is coded in Processing. It is comprised of many layers. I did it on the fly. No plan. And for some reason wanted it to be monochrome.

And for me its beauty is its imperfections: the pen fading as it runs out of ink, the unlevel bed creating rogue lines when the pen hits the paper, and all the other little inaccuracies resulting out of an imperfect build of a precise machine.

The drawing is complex and huge and a beginning. Pen plotting is so fun. Dang.

How can technology expand us rather than just perform for us? A NOSEY MONKEY by Liz Melchor invites participants to draw a monkey using only their nose. A webcam tracks nose movements in real time, then a drawing robot translates those marks to paper. The program randomly assigns a monkey photo. No preparation, no undo, no erasing. You must accept imperfection. and commit to every mark. You will laugh. Each drawing takes 1–5 minutes and is suitable for all ages, printed twice—once for the exhibition, once to take home. A wall projection displays previous participants drawings. Over the course of the installation, drawings accumulate on the wall—a collective record of joyful imperfection, open for anyone to color in. A completely new experience of the most human thing there is: drawing.

A NOSEY MONKEY 🐵 is an interactive art installation that turns your nose into a drawing tool.
It’s strange, funny, and surprisingly beautiful—an experiment in perception, play, and what happens when humans and machines make art together.
Come draw with your nose.
Then watch a robot draw what you drew.

I’m increasingly interested in playing with my drawing robots with other people. I’m sort of over drawing alone. Open doors is the perfect chance for testing interactive art installations. @creativecluster_vienna had 1500 people visit over two days and I tried really hard to get them inside my studio having fun. We drew monkeys with noses, messed up a collaborative drawing, and rewrote futures. It was insanely fun and exhausting and like every year I didn’t video enough of it—but I think these days, it is a good sign if you are too in the moment to pick up your phone.

Monkey drawing with noses coming to Lisbon at the end of this week, stay tuned for all tb specific details. I’ll post later today! by @i.draw.monkeys

What happens when you tell hundreds people to mess with a robot drawing 🤖 😃

Next stop for nose monkey drawing: Lisbon 🇵🇹 Come visit me down in the gallery at Picoas metro station on October 31 and November 1 to draw a monkey with your nose 👃 🐵 by @i.draw.monkeys

I gave a talk a couple of weeks ago and it is on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out ☺️

Thanks to @creativemorningslisbon for having me, @impacthub_lisbon for hosting us, @truthonpurpose and @lovelyladylau for being amazing hosts, @dartphotographer for her beautiful photos (on first and last slide), @diogo_correia_video for his mad video skillz, and all the other volunteers and people who showed up bright and early on a Friday morning in Lisbon.

Also random fact: Instagram suggested the Law and Order theme music to accompany this 🙃 by @i.draw.monkeys
