A graceful port de bras, a strong arabesque and even a simple second position require much more than placing the arms correctly. The real foundation begins with the connection between the arms and the shoulder blades.

One of the most common mistakes dancers make is constantly forcing the shoulders down. This can restrict natural movement, create unnecessary tension in the trapezius and affect the position of the shoulder blades.

Instead, focus on these three essential factors:

1️⃣ Allow the shoulders to rest naturally, creating space between the ears and shoulders.

2️⃣ Activate the correct muscles around the shoulder blades to support and sustain the arm position.

3️⃣ Keep the shoulder blades smoothly connected to the rib cage—avoid squeezing them together or allowing them to wing away from the back.

Beautiful arms are not created by the arms alone. When you understand how the upper body works as a whole, your port de bras becomes more stable, expressive and effortless.

We will explore this important connection in greater detail during Term 3 in the studio.
