THE Prototype. The Captain. The Leader. The Solider. The Overcomer. The Overachiever.

As the 2024-2025 Audition Season is underway in less than 24 hours, it’s no better time than to say my goodbyes.

To ‘19, thank you for the tough love, long nights and words of encouragement under your leadership. Without you, I wouldn’t know what it takes to be in leadership or Essence itself.

To ‘21, #FOREVER21, it’s forever us against the world. All 9 of you have instilled something special in me which influenced the woman I am today. The journey through this program was tough but the company of you all in each point of this experience has made it all worth the while. From 9 to 5 to 4 to now 1 - I can’t wait to see the everlasting impact 21’ has on this organization.

To ‘22, my nieces who prepared me to be a MUVA! I love you all wholeheartedly and it has been a great experience playing a part in how you matriculate throughout this program.

To ‘23 #TRIPLETROUBLE, You don’t know how much you all mean to me. Becoming your captain was one of the best things that has happened to me throughout the duration of this program. You’ve made me laugh, scream AND cry, all while proudly watching you grow into the young ladies you are. As I’ve pushed you, you’ve pushed me. Further as a woman, further as a leader; All which helped me improve and growth in other aspects of my life outside of being your ‘Captain Brown’. It’s been an honor watching your growth under my leadership and I can’t see what the future will unfold. Remember, always be the vet YOU needed as a rookie. I love you forever and a day! Anything you need, I’m one call and a tripod away lmao!

To Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Destini, Ms. Leesia & MMP Staff , I appreciate all of the support and assistance you have offered me throughout my 3 years on Essence and within MMP. I will always cherish the bond and memories I have individually with each of you and I love you all.

Signing out,
Nevaeh Brown

“For many are called, few are chosen.” — Matthew 22:14

Many don’t know I auditioned a total of 2 times for Essence. I was distraught, thinking that my first audition was my very last. A little over a week after the original audition, another SINGLE DAY audition was posted. Granted another opportunity by God, I tried out again. With no formal dance background, I was determined to be apart of something bigger than me. HBCU Dance and its rich legacy are one of the main reasons why I chose my HBCU. Coming from the NYC where HBCUs and their significance weren’t highlighted and suffer from a lack of exposure, I spent my whole highschool career looking up to captains from all over the country, not knowing that that very same title would be in my future. @morgandidthat and his coverage exposed me to the culture even MORE, I even worked up the courage to dance on his one of his lives that same summer prior to auditioning lol. 3 years later, I’m extremely grateful for what not only this organization has done for me but, for what rooms I’ve been placed in, the advice given, and the life lessons learned. Being captain has changed my life in more ways than I can imagine- let alone the blessings that have come along with it. It’s so hard but, if it was easy — everyone would be doing it.

To be apart of this organization is an HONOR! A sense of gratification you cannot receive anywhere else. Thank you Essence, for molding me into a better woman and for showing me that even in the toughest times, I am my sister’s keeper @cautheessencedanceline

To the BEST band in the land — I love and hold you close to my heart @caubands

Found a way and made it through all 4 years 🎓

An ode to Clark Atlanta University; To know you is to love you. For the past 4 years, you’ve been my home and my confidant. I’ve smiled here, cried here, and laughed here and I wouldn’t choose another university to spend 4 years with. For those who supported me, thank you. For those who doubted me, keep watching. First gen and killing sh*t.
