Ian Piczenik (@ianpiz) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores man’s relationship to the environment, examining how identity is shaped through inherited rituals and traditions. In Berber Morocco, Piczenik turns his attention to the fishing village of Imsouane and its indigenous Amazigh inhabitants - a landscape where tribal tradition persists amongst the subtle pressures of modernity.

Within this rhythm, healing emerges not as spectacle but as a balance and equilibrium: a quiet restoration woven into the rhythm of daily life. In documenting the fishermen, whose lives remain tethered to the sea, Piczenik does not romanticise tradition; rather, he observes how sustained connection to nature can ground the individual within an accelerating world.

Their gestures, routines, and quiet exchanges are not performances but repetitions - daily acts that create an enduring bond between man and water, community, and generational continuity.

Rachid, a fisherman and my friend. Imsouane, Morocco.

I still remember the first time I met Rachid at the fisherman’s port in Imsouane, how as we stood and shook hands he held mine in both of his with such stillness and warmth, as if to open his heart to mine, and enjoy unity in one another’s presence. It was a greeting I would get accustomed to every time I were to see him down at the port, and though we exchanged very few words unable to speak one another’s language, over the weeks that followed we formed a close bond and friendship, as he welcomed me into his home, showed me his work, and shared with me his very life with the same unwavering warmth he showed me with that first handshake.

These portraits I took of Rachid on my last few days in Imsouane aim to reflect his character, one of a distant stillness and a soft warmth, and one which conveys his deep set appreciation for one another’s very presence in this world which we share. taken in Imsouane - إمسوان by @allwithinmagazine

Recent fashion shoot on location in Rome. Inspired by the great masters Ferdinando Scianna and Federico Fellini, I aimed to capture the spirit and essence of “La Dolce Vita”, The Sweet Life, in this work. For me the language of the eye is universal, and I am so greatful to get to tell the story and feeling of @ed_perkin through these images. Thank you Ed for putting your faith in me, and to the incredible @chiaraalberico for opening your heart and showing me your Rome, for your patience, and your partnership 🫶

In the March of 2022 at the outbreak of the Russian attack on Ukraine, I flew with two others into Moldova, on the border with Ukraine, with 20 suitcases of clothing and £20,000 cash in a briefcase, donated to help Ukranian refugees that were flooding across the border, and into the city of Chisinău at the time. The things I witnessed affected me deeply, seeing people lose everything and countless lives torn apart.

I returned home and didnt sleep for the next week, with the help of others round the clock coordinating the charter of a private aircraft to send urgent medical equiptment from a consortium of London hospitals, to the city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine - that stood on the verge of Russian invasion. With quite literally days to spare before Russian forces would encircle it and lay siege to the city, we managed to find a hero brave enough to drive a truck down from Lviv to Mykolaiv with these supplies.

I completely forgot until very recently that I even took my camera on this trip, and though it was incredibly challenging to take photos amongst such heartbreak and devestation, I managed to take a few, which I now share with you here for the very first time.

#2: Ilana, from Kharkiv. She had left her home in haste when the shelling began in March, and we met in Chisinău, Moldova, where she was on her way to Berlin with her son, to start a new life.

Three taxi drivers stood at the counter of a dispatch stand in Varanasi, Northern India.

I still remember arriving in Varanasi, and walking past this taxi dispatch stand whilst simultaneously trying to avoid the heckles of drivers trying to draw my attention and business. However, try as they did, my focus was captivated elsewhere, on a thin sheet of glass still caught with morning dew and three imposing figures stood behind it, looking to pick up their next ride from the dispatch officer. In an instant I snuck through a door and inside the stand, and stood behind the counter. I hurriedly prepared my camera and at a brief moment when there was no dispatch officer behind the counter, I captured this shot. taken in Varanasi, India by @allwithinmagazine

“La Dolce Vita” – shot at the Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In this piece, I sought to capture the delicate balance between spirituality and sensuality in Roman culture. A city which, steeped in Christianity still carries its deep sense of piety and is yet shaped by the Renaissance’s veneration for physicality and the human form. Mother and Daughter, Goa, India

We can presume this child to be a girl as she is wearing an ear piercing on her left ear - given to her in the Hindu ritual of Karnavedha.

Karnavedha is the 9th of the 16 Hindu rights of passage done to mark the various stages of human life and to signify cultural heritage and upbringing. Tradition believes that piercing the ear helps in opening the inner ears of the child so as to receive the sacred sounds of Hindu Mantras, helping to care and protect one’s spirit as they grow. We therefore know this to be a girl as it is her left earlobe which is pierced, whereas boys will have their right earlobe pierced.
