My vote is dedicated to the wonderful man in red who left his entire family in Puebla MX (wife, kids, and everything) to migrate to this beautiful country in search of a better life and nothing more.

This pic is on Morris Street in Dover circa 1977 and I have no clue who the other cool dude is but my dad definitely made friends. Once he saved enough, he brought us over, yes through the border, but that didn’t make us criminals. We lived in CA for like a year before an uncle drove down with his camper to bring us to NJ. My parents worked two jobs and my dad’s side hustle was painting cars in the backyard. I remember my siblings and I waking up early to help him wet sand the cars. Anyway, my parents never got a fake license and we would walk everywhere, sometimes carrying bags of food shopping from Pathmark to Mt. Hope.

My dad was detained by immigration during a raid at Dover Tubular where he worked. I was in fifth grade and I remember my uncle taking us out of school and hiding us in his house. Thankfully my dad was released and shortly thereafter, Republican President Reagan signed an Amnesty which allowed us to file for permanent residency. We went through 4 years of using public transportation to get to and from our immigration appointments. I was a freshman in High School when we were finally approved.

After getting his drivers license, he would give people rides free of charge. He never forgot how we would walk everywhere rain or shine. So yes, this is personal to me. I remember the fear but I am grateful to have grown up in Dover, where we basically had every nationality in school and nobody felt better or less than anybody else. My dad and mom are now our angels and I know they would have made the same choice I made today because, we love everybody regardless of race, gender, religion, or status.
