🌡️🪭What does a heatwave feel like for migrant communities in European cities? Why do people assume you’re used to it because you “come from a hot country”? In The Heat Gap, people who came to Athens from Tunisia, Kashmir and elsewhere, along with Athenians born to migrant families, talk about work, health and belonging during ever hotter summers. They also talk about what helps them get through: a rugby team, neighbourhood children’s camps, and collective action. The film is one of a series of short documentaries by IMBRACE, an ERC-funded research project at ICTA-UAB on climate change, health and immigration. Each documentary is set in one of the project’s case study cities, and more are on the way. 🎥 Directed by @angeloskarakoulias ▶️ Full film on YouTube, link in bio! 👀Learn more about IMBRACE at imbrace-erc.org #Athens #ClimateJustice #HeatWaves #Migration #ClimateHealth #UrbanHeat by @icta.stories

🏙️ In 2014, São Paulo approved a Master Plan to build a fairer, more climate-resilient city. Putting it into practice has been another story. “From ideal to concrete: São Paulo, a mosaic of contrasts” is a documentary by Beatriz Pierri Daunt of our BCNUEJ lab, based on her research on urban planning and land change in Latin American cities. It looks at the challenges and opportunities of planning for Latin America’s largest metropolis, and at the gap between the plan’s ambitions and its execution. The film is the result of research funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the María de Maeztu Programme, and was made for a non-academic audience. 🎬 Join us for the screening at our Film Forum, followed by an online discussion with Brazilian filmmaker Manoela Meyer. 🔗 Find the link to the streaming session at the link in our stories, bio or on the calendar section of our website! 📅 Tue 10 November, 13:30–15:00 📍 Room Z/033, ICTA-UAB + online by @icta.stories
👏Eighteen ICTA-UAB researchers appear in the latest Stanford/Elsevier ranking of the world’s most-cited scientists. The ranking is based on Scopus data and covers 22 fields and 174 subfields. Congratulations to Jason Hickel, Giorgos Kallis, Isabelle Anguelovski, Jeroen van den Bergh, Joan Martínez Alier, Victoria Reyes-García, Dan Brockington, Oriol Marquet, Esteve Corbera, Johannes Langemeyer, Eric Galbraith, Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares, Arnim Scheidel, Helen Cole, Sergio Villamayor, Margarita Triguero-Mas, Samuel Nello-Deakin and Umberto Lombardo. Citations show something real about how research is read and built on. They also have limits, and some of our researchers have studied those limits. Dan Brockington co-authored a 2024 study in Quantitative Science Studies on the growing strain on scientific publishing. Among other things, it looks at how citation metrics lose their value once they become targets. How do you think research should be evaluated? Read more about the ranking at the link in our bio! 🔗 by @icta.stories
🌲Last month, authors including our researcher Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares, met in Bangkok to continue developing the IPBES Second Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Beyond updating the 2019 report, this assessment will track progress towards the 2030 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and will include a dedicated chapter on Indigenous and local knowledge systems, Álvaro's area of focus. #ICTAUAB #IPBES #Biodiversity #GlobalAssessment #EcosystemServices #IndigenousKnowledge by @icta.stories
🦇🎃 As Halloween approaches, bats are everywhere! This Bat Appreciation Month, we’re looking back at research on bats and people that ICTA-UAB researcher Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares carried out alongside his long-standing collaborators Adrià López-Baucells (BiBio Research Group, Natural Sciences Museum of Granollers) and Ricardo Rocha (University of Oxford). Over the years, the three have brought together their shared curiosity about human-bat relationships in a remarkable body of research, publishing many scientific papers and with plenty more to come! In 2021, the three of them co-edited a special issue of the Journal of Ethnobiology on how bats have been feared, celebrated and used across cultures, from folklore and spiritual traditions to food, medicine, and everyday interactions. The Madagascar folktale comes from one of their studies in that issue, based on interviews with 108 adults in 14 villages around Ranomafana National Park. Those stories can matter for bats themselves. In an earlier study in southwestern Madagascar, the team found that caves considered sacred sheltered at least six bat species, including the threatened Madagascar fruit bat (Eidolon dupreanum). But few people still recognised the caves as sacred, a sign of how changing beliefs can affect wildlife. 🦇 Find the link to the special issue of the Journal of Ethnobiology in our bio! 📷 Credits: Slide 1: 𝐺𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑚, Brazil. © Adrià López-Baucells Slide 2: Hans Memling, Hell, c. 1485 (via Wikimedia Commons) *Slide 3: 𝐸𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑎𝑙𝑏𝑎, Costa Rica. © Adrià López-Baucells Slide 4: 𝑀𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑝𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑗𝑢𝑔𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑠, Madagascar. © Adrià López-Baucells Slide 5: Zhong Kui with five bats representing the five blessings, xylograph, late 19th–early 20th century, State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg (via Wikimedia Commons); Dish with peaches and bats, Qing dynasty, Yongzheng period (1723–35), The Metropolitan Museum of Art Slide 6: 𝑃𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑡𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑐𝑢𝑠, Spain. © Adrià López-Baucells Slide 7: 𝑀𝑎𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑦𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑖, Madagascar. © Adrià López-Baucells by @icta.stories
🔗 🗺️ Imatge 1: Plànol d’Ildefons Cerdà i Pere Roca (1861). Most urban flood planning shares a blind spot: it overlooks pluvial flooding. 🌧️⚠️ When sudden downpours overwhelm drainage systems, the fallout triggers cascading infrastructure failures and hits marginalized communities hardest. In a new study published in PNAS, researchers introduce an integrated framework to evaluate flood risk by connecting: ▫️ Direct population exposure ▫️ Social vulnerability ▫️ Disruptions to critical infrastructures and services The work was led by Pablo Herreros-Cantis alongside a team of co-authors. 🌍 For October 24th, International Day of Climate Action, we looked at where the world stands, and there's both good news and bad news. Clear progress in some areas, setbacks in others, and overall change still far slower than the science calls for. Several of the studies behind this post come from ICTA-UAB researchers, including Jason Hickel, Jeroen van den Bergh and Dan Brockington. Their studies are a reminder that what counts as progress is still debated. Carbon pricing has cut emissions, but how far it can take us is contested. And even where emissions are falling, once you count the raw materials economies consume, decoupling looks less convincing. It's clear that progress is possible. But we've heard it before: We need to move faster. Swipe through for the full picture. Sources for every figure are in the first comment 👇 by @icta.stories
