THE BEAUTY OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE 🌍

A little glimpse into a beautiful conversation at Africa Fashion Week Cologne @africa_fashion_week_cologne — about what I do, the different worlds I move between, and why the answer to that question might take a little longer. 😄

Thank you @africa_fashion_week_cologne for the warm welcome, the conversations and for creating a space where creativity, culture and people come together. ❤️ by @idolizedse

Halloween is just around the corner, and I came across this video from last year. 🎃

I love making fun of things, including myself, and I can be very unserious sometimes. 😂 But somehow, even the most random moments in my life tend to carry a social message. 👰 💍

This was literally just a random conversation with my friend in the car after a Halloween party. We were eating pizza, laughing, and somewhere between all the nonsense, my anthropologist brain kicked in.

And it made me think about something I’ve observed for a long time.

Why are so many women still taught to see marriage as something they have to achieve?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming about marriage, building a family, or wanting to share your life with someone. It can be one of the most beautiful things in life. But I sometimes wonder what happens when being married becomes more important than actually being happy.

When the status itself becomes the achievement.

When staying becomes more important than asking whether there is still love, respect, peace or safety.

And this isn’t about judging women who choose marriage or a traditional life. Quite the opposite. It’s about questioning the expectations that sometimes teach us that simply being able to say “I’m married” means we’ve somehow made it.

That’s what makes this completely random Halloween moment so ironic to me.

There I am, dressed as a bride, looking like I’ve clearly been through something, laughing and saying:

“Haha, we made it. Anyway… I’m married.”

Completely unserious in the moment.

But maybe not so unserious after all. by @idolizedse

I’ve always seen myself as a bridge — between disciplines, between cultural anthropology and the arts, between analysis and creativity, and between culture and design.

For me, these worlds were never meant to exist separately. Fashion can carry history, identity, craftsmanship and cultural memory, while at the same time creating something entirely new.

This look is an expression of exactly that. Designed and created by me, it brings different cultural influences together through fabric, silhouette and detail — not by erasing what makes them distinct, but by allowing them to meet within my own creative language.

And there couldn’t have been a more fitting place to wear it than Africa Fashion Week Cologne. @africa_fashion_week_cologne

What AFW Cologne is creating goes far beyond a runway. It provides a platform for African fashion, designers and creatives to be seen, while creating space for cultural exchange, connection and new perspectives. That kind of work matters. Thank you to the entire team behind AFW Cologne for the vision, energy and work that goes into creating a platform like this.

Being invited on stage as a Special Guest and introduced as a fashion designer from Frankfurt made the experience even more meaningful.

It brought together so many parts of who I am and what I do: anthropology, culture, design, creativity and the idea of building bridges between worlds that are often treated as separate.

Different roots. Different stories. New expressions.

The beauty isn’t in making cultures look alike.
It’s in discovering what becomes possible when they meet. ✨
