“Fish on!” I called.

Colleen and Kate whooped in support as I held my rod tip high, the line peeling off the reel.

“Nice one!” yelled Kate.

“It’s into my backing!” I shouted, and my internal dialogue went from “I’m just grateful to be in nature” to “Please don’t let me lose this one!” I kept the line tight as I reeled when the fish jumped out of the water flashing an arc of white belly. Could it be a bull trout?

I’ll never know because the line went slack along with my heart. I looked at the fly and the hook had snapped off.
