📚 Today was a warm and slow Sunday morning, and Luma made her usual stop at the little free library after a short walk. She enjoyed this part of the city, which was even quieter than usual in the summer. As she was putting a new book in the little library with a satisfying smile, she heard what sounded like a familiar laugh behind her.

Sure enough, Sheridan was there on the bench, his back to her, with a pretty girl sitting beside him in a closeness that suggested something more than friendship. Her heart sank and she hastily turned to walk in the opposite direction, hoping not to be noticed.

“Girl, you really need to put your act together and pick your crushes better,” she muttered to herself angrily.

🚩Their tea had just arrived when Julian finally spoke.

“Thank you for meeting me.”
Luma avoided his eyes.
“So… how have you been?” he asked with a nervous smile.
“All good, Julian. The shop is keeping me busy… Are we really going to make small talk?”

He hesitated, then asked.
“What about the guy I saw you with the other day? Is it serious?”
“Why do you care?”
“Come on, Luma. Don’t be like that.”
“Well, it’s not serious enough for him to tell me he loved me and then cheat on me with his colleague. That much I know.”
“I didn’t cheat. She kissed me while I was drunk. It didn’t mean anything.”

Luma just stared at him. Her thoughts were interrupted by Julian’s phone lighting up with a Tindoll notification.

“Tell me you didn’t just match with the waitress…”
Julian hurriedly turned the phone face down. “I promise you, I…”

But Luma was already on her feet, brushing off her trousers.

“I don’t know what I was expecting. I’m leaving. Please forget my number. I really can’t even look at you right now.”

He watched her walk away, stunned.
A moment later, he noticed the waitress standing beside him, smiling. Before she could say a word, he raised a hand to stop her.

“Please… don’t.”

🚏 Jules was on her way to meet her brother in town, absentmindedly scrolling through Instagram, when a post caught her attention. She zoomed in on the pictures and read the caption:

“Well,” she said softly, “look at you, Charles. Your dream finally came true. You’ve come such a long way since college…”

For a moment, her thoughts drifted back to their university days. A nostalgic smile lingered on her lips as the sun warmed her face.

🍦 Sunday evening, the square had emptied as people headed home for dinner or to watch the football match. Dani was sitting at her favorite spot, FaceTiming her bestie, when she heard a commotion nearby…

That’s when she saw them: Mia Vinterdale and Chuck Window, two of her favorite actors, standing just a few meters away.

Completely unbothered by people snapping pictures from a distance, the two stars soon went on their way, leaving our girl completely star-struck as her ice cream slowly melted.

📚 Sheridan and Luma were in the middle of a conversation when Julian stepped into the Boreal Quill. Maybe they were talking about a book... Maybe they were finally agreeing to have a coffee together... Nobody knows. But their body language alone was enough to prompt Julian to interrupt.

“Well, now I can see why you’re too busy to answer my calls.”

Luma startled when she saw Julian. Then, turning back to Sheridan, she said, “Give us a second, will you?”
“Yes, why don’t you get lost among the shelves for a minute?” Julian added dryly.
Sheridan looked questioningly at Luma, who silently mouthed an apology.
“No worries, I’ll go,” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “I’ll see you around,” he told Luma before heading nonchalantly toward the back of the shop.

Luma turned angrily toward Julian. “You have some nerve showing up here like that.”
“Come on, I came with your favorite pastries. You don’t want these to go to waste, do you?”
“Julian. Please leave. I made it clear I didn’t want to see you.”
“You can’t keep avoiding me. All I’m asking is that you hear me out. Then I’ll let you go, I promise.”
She sat down.
“I’ll think about it”, she sighed.
Julian put the paper bag next to her.
“We deserve real closure with each other, you know” he added before leaving, her back still turned to him.

🎯 It was Saturday at Nuit Noire, where Kelly and Bryce had their usual beer and darts evening. Except Kelly was losing at darts. Which never happened before.

“Is it the gorgeous babe you keep staring at that’s throwing you off your game tonight?”

“Mmm, why don’t you just enjoy the win and shut it?” he answered, sulking. Still, he glanced over to see if the girl was looking their way.

“Well, I’ll leave you to figure that out. I need to make a quick stop at the restroom. The next round is on you!” Byice claimed before jumping off his stool.

Kelly looked toward the bar as the beautiful blonde was tucking her hair behind her ear, looking straight at him. He walked toward her slowly, racking his brain for a smart opening, but she started the conversation as soon as he sat down.

“Did your friend abandon you too?” she asked playfully.

Then, before he could answer, her phone pinged and she sighed at the text message. With a wave of her hand, she caught the barmaid’s attention.

“Siobhan, put this on my tab, will you?”

She placed a hand on her handbag and slid gracefully off her stool.

“Well, this was fun! I guess I’ll see you around… Kelly,” she said seductively.

And just like that, she was gone, leaving him stunned. “How does she know my name?”

Siobhan didn’t miss a thing and watched her leave.
I guess that’s how it’s done, she thought.

THREE WEEKS EARLIER…

Focused on her task and humming along to a song on the radio, Jules didn’t hear the footsteps approaching behind her.
“Guess who’s here!” Two hands clasped over her eyes. She spun around and hit her brother in the chest. Julian looked at her, half amused and immediately apologetic when he saw her frightened expression. “Julian, I swear…” She started menacingly.

He raised both hands in surrender. “I rang the bell, but nobody answered!” She glared at him. “Well, you don’t answer your phone when I call, either.”
“Touché. Come on, sis, aren’t you happy to see me?”
She sighed, her eyes smiling brightly. “When did you get back?”
“Yesterday evening.” A pause. “I love what you did here!” She didn’t answer and raised an eyebrow. “So… what brings you here?”
“Nothing special… I just wanted to see you. See how you were doing.”
“You’re not fooling me, Julian.”
“All right, all right.” Avoiding her inquisitive look, he asked, “Have you heard from Luma lately?”

She stepped away from him and crossed her arms. “Nope, we are not doing that. If you want to know about Luma, you can just ask her yourself.”
“Come on, tell me if she’s okay, at least?”
“She’s fine,” Jules said with a sigh. “You should call her, though.”
“I know,” he answered softly.

They remained quietly side by side for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts.

🌞 It was a long, unexpectedly warm day. Kelly was sitting by the fountain, craving for cooler air.
He was already there when Brooklyn and Billie-Kate settled at an empty table and began sharing each other’s gelati.
He checked his phone for the tenth time as Dani stretched out on the bench, eager for her first spoonful of cherry ice cream. By the time Leon stepped up to order, Kelly had already been waiting for twenty-five minutes.

“Ten more minutes, and then I’m gone”, he thought.

🪴 Both running small businesses, Jules and her friend Luma hadn’t seen each other for a while. They finally found time for a little Sunday meet, and Luma had bought madeleines from Petit Gateau and a few books about plants and gardening from her bookstore. Jules started browsing and, without lifting her eyes, started the conversation.

“How are things?” she asked.

Luma put down her cup of tea.
“Oh, everything is great! The shop is doing well, and I’m actually thinking of starting a book club…”
“That is not what I’m curious about,” said Jules with a wink.
“Well, you know there is no time for that…”
“Oh, come on!” Jules closed the book and looked her friend in the eyes. “It’s been months! You need to get out there again! Please, tell me it’s not because of my jerk of a brother…”
“No, not at all. You know it’s not. Actually,” Luma added, “There is one guy. A client. He comes often, and we talk a bit. I know he also hangs at the cafe next door quite a lot...”
“Now, that’s something! Tell me more!”

Luma smiled mysteriously.

“What about you? You were saying this guy, what was his name again?”
“Oh, Him! Well, I had better conversations with my plants than him. So I think I’ll stick to succulents for a while. Thank you for the books,” she added, grateful. “I love them!”

It was quite late in the afternoon when they hugged each other and promised to meet again soon, in the city this time.
