The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) proudly announces that Dr Diane Menzies is the winner of the 2026 IFLA Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture. Dr Diane Menzies is a landscape architect, researcher, educator, and international leader who has worked in landscape architecture for more than five decades. She has held leadership roles within IFLA, including Secretary General and President, as well as leadership positions within the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA). She has worked across more than 50 countries to strengthen the profession globally, engaging with governments, universities, and professional bodies to promote landscape architecture, support education, and build international networks. Her work is grounded in a te ao Māori (Māori world view) understanding that “nothing exists in isolation.” Whenua (land), people, wairua (spirit), mauri (lifeforce), whakapapa (genealogy), and the relationships between them are inseparable. This understanding has shaped her practice for more than five decades and guided her approach to landscape architecture as “not as a technical discipline alone, but as a relational and cultural practice.” Diane has contributed to governance, research, teaching, and practice, advancing Indigenous knowledge and cultural values within landscape architecture. As a Commissioner with the Environment Court of Aotearoa New Zealand, she was involved in resolving environmental conflicts through mediation and decision-making across more than 200 cases. Diane continues to focus on environmental change while upholding ecological and cultural integrity, deepening mātauranga Māori in design and planning, and supporting the next generation through mentoring, teaching, and collaborative work. Her ongoing work is guided by whakapapa, kaitiakitanga, and relational practice. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and deepest gratitude to Diane for her extraordinary contributions, generous leadership, and enduring dedication to the landscape architecture profession and to nurturing the next generation of leaders. by @iflaworld
The recipient of the 2026 IFLA President's Award is Maria Gabriella Trovato. Her remarkable dedication as Chair of Landscape Architects Without Borders (LAWB), alongside her tireless academic and humanitarian work on contested landscapes, disaster-resilient communities, and forced migration across Lebanon and the Mediterranean, makes her an exceptionally deserving honouree. Maria Gabriella Trovato is Associate Professor and Leader of the International Master’s in Landscape Architecture for Global Sustainability at the School of Landscape Architecture, LANDSAM, NMBU, Norway, and Adjunct Associate Professor at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. Her practice and research explore innovative responses to the landscapes shaped by climate change, natural resource depletion, forced migration, and ongoing conflict — work that consistently seeks to blend ecological performance with design culture rather than treat them as separate concerns. As director of the IFLA Working Group Landscape Architects Without Borders, she focuses on contested landscapes in Middle Eastern countries affected by disasters, crises, and displacement, including new geographies of migration in the Mediterranean basin and informal Syrian settlements in Lebanon. This work is supported by the European Union, the Cross-Border Cooperation in the Mediterranean, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. In recent years, her research has converged around a landscape approach to socio-ecological repair in conflict-affected territories. Drawing on case studies from Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, and climate-affected regions, and engaging with post-humanist, decolonial, and political ecology frameworks, she argues that landscapes are integrative spaces where ecological restoration, cultural memory, community adaptation, and relational justice are mutually constitutive rather than sequential or separate. We extend our warm wishes! by @iflaworld
Join us in celebrating Landscape Architecture Month 🌿 We would love to hear your stories, reflections, and how you are celebrating in your own way. #wlam2026 #IFLA #landscapearchitecture #landscapearchitect by @iflaworld
There is something truly special about seeing months of hard work come to life, bringing so many of us together around one shared vision: putting landscape first. Thank you for being there and being part of it. Our 2026 IFLA World Congress began by honouring the memory of Professor Kongjian Yu, whose visionary work reminded us that the best way to live with water is not to wall it out, but to give it room. We are committed to ensuring his vision for a “Sponge Planet” endures. Reflecting on our Congress theme, Liminal Landscapes, Dr Bruno Marques invited us to look beyond the lines we draw on maps and recognise the living connections between landscapes, watersheds and coastlines. As he so beautifully expressed, ‘a watershed is not simply a line on a map, but a conversation between mountain and sea, carried by water.’ We were so honoured to announce that Dr Diane Menzies is the winner of the 2026 IFLA Jellicoe Award in Landscape Architecture. She is the first Indigenous person and the first New Zealander to receive this award. We thank her for showing us that the landscape is not something to be managed, but something to be loved and respected. Alongside this special recognition, we were delighted to present the 2026 IFLA President’s Award to Maria Gabriella Trovato. Maria spent a career asking a question that many of us find uncomfortable: Who is landscape architecture for, and where is it needed most? Maria embodies the Federation we hope we will become: courageous, humble, generous, and global. We launched our GLA Awards this year, recognising the remarkable work being carried out across the world. We thank everyone whose work continues to inspire and advance our profession. IFLA is embracing key issues for the profession, such as Indigenous knowledge, social justice, and disaster relief, moving beyond traditional approaches, particularly those shaped by our colonial past. This shift is also reflected in a new direction for governance, with our first African president, Carey Duncan. Our profession is making space for voices that will help shape a more inclusive future. As Diane expresses it, we see a new IFLA and a new vision. by @iflaworld
We successfully concluded the second day of the IFLA World Council 2026, filled with inspiring conversations, meaningful collaborations, and a shared commitment to advancing landscape architecture worldwide. Every year, we look forward to reconnecting with our partners, exchanging ideas, and taking part in strategic workshops that challenge us to think creatively about how we can continue building a stronger IFLA together. Day 2 was a wonderful reflection of that spirit. Through four partner-led workshops, we explored opportunities to deepen our collaborations and translate shared ambitions into meaningful action. We were also delighted to welcome our Corporate Members Lappset Group (Jens Lindgren Mikko Partanen), Turenscape (Dong Wang), CLARB - Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (Matt Miller) and Crystal Fountains (Darcy L'Heureux), who demonstrated their commitment to landscape architecture. We are grateful for their continued engagement and look forward to nurturing these partnerships over the long term, working together to create more inclusive and more sustainable landscapes. The afternoon continued with four parallel workshops encouraging open exchange, fresh perspectives, and collective thinking. The day also marked an important moment of transition for IFLA, as Dr Bruno Marques handed over the baton to our new President, Carey Duncan, who will lead the Federation into its next chapter. We extend our sincere thanks to Bruno for his leadership and dedication, and warmly welcome Carey as we continue building on the momentum of our collective work. As we reflect on another productive and inspiring day, one thing remains clear: the future of landscape architecture depends on the connections we build, the knowledge we share, and the partnerships we nurture. We look forward to the new chapter ahead, continuing to learn, collaborate, and make a difference — because landscape matters, and together, we can achieve so much more. by @iflaworld
IFLA seats its first Board of Directors, opening a new chapter in global governance for Landscape Architecture! The International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) has formally seated its first-ever Board of Directors at the opening day of the IFLA World Council meeting, held alongside the 62nd IFLA World Congress in Hong Kong. Eleven leaders from ten countries take office under IFLA’s new Constitution and Bylaws, following a year-long, skills-based nomination process. This landmark appointment completes a governance transition that began with the adoption of IFLA’s new Constitution and Bylaws in March 2026. “This is a landmark moment for IFLA”, says Dr Bruno Marques, outgoing President. “The new governance structure is not a departure from what makes IFLA strong: the dedication of our delegates, the vitality of our regions, and the depth of our collective expertise. It is a framework designed to make those strengths work harder and reach further.” Carey Duncan, President, adds: “I am honoured to take up this role at such a pivotal moment for IFLA. This Board brings together a wealth of governance experience and a shared commitment to representing and strengthening our profession across its diverse global contexts.” IFLA extends its sincere thanks to the outgoing Executive Committee for steering the Federation through four Congresses and the governance reform itself, while ensuring continuity in governance, day-to-day operations and financial management throughout the transition. We warmly welcome our new Board of Directors as IFLA opens an exciting new chapter in global governance for landscape architecture! #IFLA #LandscapeArchitecture #landscapearchitects IFLA2026 by @iflaworld
IFLA participated in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17 Armenia), advocating for landscape to be placed at the heart of global biodiversity action. Through its position statement, Landscape Must Come First, IFLA called for landscape-led approaches to be integrated into biodiversity policy, planning and implementation, highlighting the essential role of landscape architecture in reversing biodiversity loss and translating global commitments under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework into meaningful action. As part of IFLA’s engagement, Sohyun Park contributed to discussions connecting landscape architecture, urban planning and biodiversity. She spoke at Refuge by Design: Building Cities as Habitat for Living — A Framework for Biodiversity in the Built Environment, a session organised in collaboration with the American Society of Landscape Architects(ASLA) and the U.S. Green Building Council(USGBC), exploring how cities can be designed as habitats that support biodiversity and human well-being. She also presented at Place-based and Urban Nature Futures, co-hosted by Utrecht University and the University of Southern California, which explored place-based approaches to addressing urban biodiversity challenges and advancing nature-positive futures. Beyond these speaking engagements, Park’s programme included a conversation with ICLEI Korea, providing an opportunity to connect landscape-based approaches with local governance and implementation. Her participation formed part of the wider COP17 dialogue on strengthening collaboration to advance urban biodiversity. Indra Purs, President, IFLA Europe, also joined the IFLA delegation, supporting its broader advocacy for landscape-led planning and the integration of landscape architecture into biodiversity decision-making. IFLA’s participation highlighted the importance of moving from global biodiversity commitments to practical action through landscape planning and design, nature-positive cities, stronger governance. by @iflaworld

Taking Action for Nature: Put Landscape at the Heart of Biodiversity Implementation Join the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) in urging Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to put landscape at the heart of the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the next generation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). As delegations gather in Yerevan, in the South Caucasus, for CBD @cop17armenia (19 to 30 October 2026), the world takes stock of a framework agreed in 2022 while nature continues to decline. This decline is, at its core, a failure of design: a result of human systems built in conflict with natural ones. IFLA urges all Parties, non-state actors, and financiers to recognise a fundamental truth: LANDSCAPE MUST COME FIRST. 🌿 Join IFLA at CBD COP17 📍 22 October | 2.45–3.45 pm CET / 8.45–9.45 am EST | Upper Stage, Green Zone IFLA will co-host Advancing Landscape Architecture for Urban Biodiversity to Ensure Human and Environmental Health with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Today marks the 126th birth anniversary of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1900–1996) — a visionary landscape architect whose ideas and influence helped shape the profession as we know it today. A founder and former president of IFLA, Jellicoe played a defining role in establishing the global identity of landscape architecture. His view of landscape architecture as “the mother of all arts” reflected his belief in its unique ability to bring together design, ecology, culture, and human experience. In recognition of this enduring legacy, IFLA is opening the Call for Nominations for the IFLA Jellicoe Award 2027 — the Federation’s highest honour for a living landscape architect. The award celebrates lifetime achievement, influence, and lasting contribution to landscape architecture. It recognises individuals whose work has shaped the profession, enriched society and the environment, and contributed to a deeper understanding of the role landscape architecture can play in our world. Who among today’s landscape architects is leaving a legacy that will influence generations to come? Nominations are open until 15 January 2027. Submissions should be sent to the Secretariat for the Jellicoe Award at: jellicoeaward@iflaworld.org.
