#rubypress publication no. 68: 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 – 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝑰𝒕 𝑼𝒏𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒔, edited by Elena Schütz, Julian Schubert, Leonard Streich, in collaboration mit Sarah Scherzer and Eva Erny

Developed with students at UdK Berlin over two semesters, the book combines design work, interviews, and graphic analysis in two parts:
The first part, 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐈𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐬, investigates the mechanisms that lead to imbalances in housing distribution and describes the status quo through graphics and case studies. From this emerges the call for more flexible — and thus more sustainably usable — housing models.
The second part introduces the concept of 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 and presents architectural strategies that organize housing as a process shaped by shifting needs, social constellations, and temporal rhythms. Through design projects set in various urban contexts, it demonstrates how permeable spatial structures can be established to enable appropriation, adaptation, and collective use.

The concept of constellations housing challenges the rigid assignments of rooms within apartments as well as the fixed boundaries between them, proposing instead flexible, permeable spatial structures. Rooms are no longer clearly allocated to individual units but can be used and combined in different ways regardless of their location. The result is a dynamic housing model that adapts to changing life situations and enables diverse forms of living together — from the nuclear family to intergenerational shared housing.

#rubypress publication no. 67: 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒖𝒕𝒔 – 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, by Marc Angélil and Cary Siress.

Situated at the nexus of scholarship and activism, A Thousand Cuts: Architectures of Displacement unpacks entrenched entanglements between illegalized migration and environment-making practices. The architects Marc Angélil and Cary Siress examine one of the most vicious contemporary challenges shaping the production of space across the globe, exploring the material regimes that keep displaced populations at bay and identifying potential sites of struggle to resist the constituent dynamics that sustain divisions.

In Space is Politics, architect and urban planner Hans Teerds demonstrates that space is not merely a prerequisite for political activity; it is political in itself. Drawing on Hannah Arendt’s political theory, Teerds argues that architecture should be recognised as a social practice that shapes and influences who meets, who participates and who is excluded.

#rubypress publication no. 62: 𝑪𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒐’𝒔 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒔, edited by Luc Merx.

When Merx discovered the stucco workshops in Cairo he felt as if „diving into the eighteenth-century Rome of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The workshops did not have roofs. Their architecture appeared unfinished and at the same time was already half-decayed and covered in a patina. The walls were adorned with architectural details. The resemblance to historical plaster workshops in nineteenth-century England was striking; in both, the artisans used the workshop as a showroom and a reference for planning their projects. One entered a kind of spatial catalogue. Although these were ateliers, they felt more like a dilapidated, opulently decorated palace. The
ornaments themselves appeared not as banal samples in a showroom but rather as a rich archaeological collection that included Roman spolia. Architecture from antiquity had been disassembled into its individual components, creating a sort of building kit. The strict classical ordering system had been deconstructed; the resulting pieces could be recombined at will.“

With four photo series by Luc Merx and essays by Matthias Castorph, Federico Garrido, Holger Gladys, Christian Holl, Luc Merx, Werner Oechslin, Christian Rabl, Rolf Sachsse, Heiner Stengel, Francesca Torello, Dalia Wahdan, Gijs Wallis-de-Vries, Holger Zinke.

#rubypress publication no. 61: „New Tools, Vol. 1: Architectural Discourses on the Anthropocene“, edited by Adria Daraban and Frédéric Schnee.

𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝑻𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔 investigates the evolving relationship between architectural theory and practice within the context of contemporary discourse.
In light of the climate crisis and socio-demographic change, the field must rethink design to ensure it is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable across generations. Bringing together interdisciplinary contributions, the series offers critical perspectives that support a reorientation of our approach to spatial practice.

With contributions by: Marc Angélil, Cary Siress, Elke Krasny, Space Caviar, Freek Persyn, Lukas Fink, Charlotte Schaeben.
