“Familiar and Strange” with Lyndsey Groth is the third episode of Season 2 of Immaterial Voices.

#ImmaterialVoices #LyndseyGroth #ImmaterialBooks by @immaterialbooks

En Plein Air takes its title from the practice of painting outdoors: making work out in the world, beyond the studio.

Ciel Baptiste turns that idea toward the flat, airy landscapes of Central Illinois: waterlogged fields, barns, phone lines, cornfields, and rural landmarks. These images, including work from Midwest Gothic, hold traces of a once-bustling agricultural landscape as it falls into memory and decay.

Urbana Americana by @hotemjodi follows the photographer’s move from rural Bengal to a small town in the American Midwest. In unfamiliar streets he finds fragments of familiarity and begins to understand a new place on its own terms.

How does our way of seeing develop? And how does it change over time?

In Season Two, Episode Two of Immaterial Voices, photographer, walker, writer, and podcaster Bryan Formhals @bryanformhals reflects on photography as a vocation. The conversation moves through walking, urban space, photobooks, and his decade-long New York City Public Realm project.

“Truth still exists. It arrives broken into fragments, each one tailored to its audience.”

The Future of 2028 begins with a simple prompt: predict what 2028 will be like—and write it as a manifesto.

Written by AI and transformed through the graphic language of @leafy.yeh and @twopants.studio, the result is both prediction and artifact: a fragmented vision of a future that feels increasingly close.

From Fields of Vision 2024: the work of Kyle Stephen Dunn. @kylesdunn

Dunn is a photographer and lens-based artist whose work traces queer identity, memory, and community across the landscapes of Central Illinois. Revisiting places from his own past, he draws attention to LGBTQIA+ lives and histories that have often remained undocumented—or been erased altogether.

Since exhibiting with Fields of Vision, Dunn has completed an MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His expanding practice brings photography into conversation with painting, sculpture, personal memory, and the physical traces left within a place.

Fields of Vision returns this year with In Plain Sight. Photographers working across Central Illinois and the Midwest are invited to submit projects that look closely at the people, places, routines, and histories shaping life here.

A momentary recording of contemporary living.

In A Dead Tree in Our Yard, A Vibrant One on the Highway, Brandon Ichiro Tani brings together fragments, encounters, and micro-narratives to form an impossible present—one shaped by proximity and distance, acceleration and memory, the sacred and the routine.

Looking back at the opening of Fields of Vision in 2024—artists, photographs, and viewers brought together around the question of how Central Illinois is seen from the inside.

That conversation continues with “In Plain Sight”, the third edition of the series.

Photographers working across Central Illinois and the Midwest are invited to submit projects that look closely at overlooked spaces, routines, landscapes, and histories.

Across the Illinois landscape, utility poles and power lines become a kind of drawing. Marking distance, connection, and the movement from one horizon to another. “Primary Wires” by Ryan Searl @ryan__ramsey follows the quiet rhythm of this everyday infrastructure.
