The Cornell sexual assault case has brought new attention to an enduring problem. Fraternity members face deserved criticism for a group chat in which they joked about the incident rather than stopping it. Administrators face similar outrage for allowing some of the men involved to write essays to get out of more serious consequences. Failure to hold people accountable for sexual violence is an enduring problem, but research shows that the harshest punishments are not necessarily the most effective solutions. Join Meg Bossong, Executive Director of Massachusetts Society for a World Free of Sexual Harm by Youth for a nuanced conversation about the most effective and ethical ways to hold young people accountable for sexual harm.

Full decriminalization is the only policy that evidence shows improves s-x workers’ health and safety. When s-x work isn’t criminalized, people can safely report if they witness or experience trafficking or exploitation, without fear that they themselves could be arrested.

Organizations that have called for full decriminalization include Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, UNFDP, the UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls, and Freedom Network.

This week in the podcast, I welcome violence prevention expert Meg Stone, the executive director of @impact_boston and author of two books, The Cost of Fear and Don’t Fight Back. We discuss Stone’s career path, starting with how she found her area of focus via her college women’s studies program, which introduced her to some inspiring practitioners via her courses and academic internships. She has held a host of roles in domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy, with a great deal of hands-on work in family court and shelters, in education, and in her current leadership role at IMPACT Boston. Stone describes building IMPACT’s self-defense classes into a broader set of trainings that help folks to be empowered even while under stress and across a range of situations. In the process, she reflects on stepping into leadership during organizational transition and the current and challenging nonprofit funding landscape. We also discuss some important practical insights for those seeking to start of pivot into nonprofit work, including the importance of valuing the underlying tasks and skills that make mission-driven work possible.
