Join multi-disciplinary artists Dominick Porras and Frita Caro, who will engage in conversation around experiences in art & activism and provide a demonstration in serigraphy poster printing.

The printing of “Planeta de Senos” on posters celebrates artivist solidarity among women artists and their allies. The image originates in the work of Una Mujer Elefante, a “monster” of so-called diversity, of cultural misunderstanding, of failed translation, of neocolonial disappointment in matters of affection, a figure that is embodied in this image, one that exacerbates, at different levels, the female body as a shield.

This workshop is free and open to everyone!

𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘀 is a multi-disciplinary & lens-based Indigenous (Chicano-Coahuiltec) artist residing in Northern California. For more than two decades, Porras has worked as a collaborative community artist in serigraphy. His community-based work in printing engages artists who are not primarily printers, while sharing the process of printing through public engagement printing demonstrations. Porras acknowledges that the practice of printing is a powerful and autonomous medium with an informative ability to inform the masses. Porras is currently a visiting scholar with Fulbright Canada at Concordia University.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼 also known as 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗼 or 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘇ó𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼, is a transdisciplinary artist known by the nickname 𝙐𝙣𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙢𝙢𝙚 é𝙡é𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙩.𝙚. She writes autofictional narratives, creates evocative images, sculpts hybrid forms, invents anti-fascist prayers, and sings spells to invoke spaces of resistance and poetry. Her work explores the intersections between identity, memory, and territory, weaving connections between the personal and the collective. She lives and works in Tio’tia:ke-Mooniyang-Montréal.

Rejoignez les artistes pluridisciplinaires Dominick Porras et Frita Caro, qui animeront une discussion autour de leurs expériences dans les domaines de l’art et de l’activisme et proposeront une démonstration d’impression d’affiches en sérigraphie.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our Ofrendas Digitales workshop, led by Dominick Porras @celestial_coyotl !

This workshop gave participants tools to engage in alternative photographic practices in Polaroid photography while building an understanding of the annual celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). In this approach, participants printed a Polaroid of a loved one who has passed and learned how to transfer it onto various papers.

If you missed the workshop, we’ll offer a second one this Thursday afternoon as part of Milieux’s 10-year anniversary. Link in bio! by @indigenousfuturesrc

Workshop:

What might a RezBorg look like, and what futures could it help us imagine?

Using gel pens, metallic markers, and an assortment of Y2K-inspired materials, participants are invited to design and draw their own RezBorgs inspired by the works of 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗼, currently on display in the exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘞𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘺.

RezBorgs consider the relationship between Indigenous identities, technology, and futurity. The term brings together the “rez,” a colloquial term for an Indigenous reserve, and a “borg,” referencing the cyborg, or a being that combines human and technological elements. Thinking through Indigenous futurisms, technology, and speculative world-building, we’ll explore how RezBorgs might help embody our relations and visions of the future.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗼 is a member of the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach with mixed Algonquin from Kitigan Zibi. Her artistic mediums such as 3D art, animation, graphic design, and digital painting, explore the themes of Indigenous Futurism combining the complexities of historical, modern, and futuristic topics.

No previous drawing experience is necessary.

This workshop will be held in English and is open to everyone but encouraged for Indigenous students. Snacks and drawing materials are provided.

Digital Ofrendas/ Digital Offerings is a photography-based workshop designed to participate in the spirit of constructing your own personalized Dia de los Muertos Ofrendas (offerings). Led by artist and IFRC Research Chair in Indigenous Knowledges Dominick Porras, participants will attend a brief presentation on the significance of Día de los Muertos, print with mobile app-based Polaroid technology printers, and learn traditional hands-on Polaroid emulsion-lifting processes.

Within the Mexican/Latinx Diáspora, Día de los Muertos is recognized on Nov. 2 as a day of remembrance for those who have passed into the spiritual realms, joining our ancestors. To honour our loved ones, Ofrendas (offerings) are physical gestures that express gratitude and reverence.

Participants are encouraged to bring digital images of loved ones or items for printing on Polaroid film on their personal mobile device.

This event is free and open to the Concordia Community. All materials are provided. Registration is required.

This event is supported by the Concordia Research Chair in Onkwehonwené:ha.

How can Indigenous histories be reimagined through art and technology?

Check out this Concordia News article about Dominick Porras, Concordia’s 2026–27 Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Knowledges, whose research explores 400-year-old Pecos rock paintings through animation and new media. Working with the IFRC, Porras approaches these paintings not simply as archaeological records, but as works of Indigenous art that continue to speak across time.
