Leadership doesn’t start when you add on stripes.

It starts the day you become the kind of officer other people want to work with.

How you treat your partners.

How you talk to people.

Whether you help or criticize.

Whether you build trust or chip away at it one interaction at a time.

Promotion doesn’t create those habits.

It reveals them.

Then you become a sergeant.

Now your attitude sets the temperature for the shift.

Your office becomes one of two places.

The place people willingly walk into.

Or the place they only go when they have to.

As you move higher, the responsibility changes.

You’re no longer responsible for just your own leadership.

You’re responsible for every leader beneath you.

If one supervisor is driving good cops away, destroying morale, or making officers dread walking into their office, that is no longer just their problem.

It is yours.

Bad leadership rarely destroys culture overnight.

It happens one unchecked conversation at a time.

One ignored complaint.

One promoted ego.

One tolerated behavior.

The best leaders don’t wait for people to tell them there is a problem.

They go looking.

They ask questions.

They listen.

They look for patterns instead of dismissing every concern as an isolated complaint.

One complaint might be personality.

The same complaint from five different people is probably telling you something.

Leaders still need coaching.

Leaders still need mentoring.

Leaders still need honest feedback.

And sometimes leaders need to be held accountable.

No rank should ever put someone above being coached.

The culture your officers experience every day is not built by policy alone.

It is built by the people you choose to promote, the behavior you choose to reward, and the leadership you are willing to tolerate.

Every officer owns a piece of the culture.

Every supervisor multiplies it.

And everyone responsible for those supervisors has an even greater responsibility to protect it.

So ask yourself:

How are you showing up?

What kind of leader are you becoming?

And what kind of culture are you allowing around you and beneath you?

Some people get promoted and then try to become leaders.

Others were already leading long before anyone put stripes on their sleeve.

They were the ones people called when things got messy.

The ones officers trusted.

The ones teaching, coaching, solving problems, and setting the tone without needing a title to do it.

That is what promotion should recognize.

Rank can give you authority.

It cannot manufacture influence.

The stripes should recognize the leader, not try to create one.

RANK IS WORN.
RESPECT IS EARNED.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY. by @influence.over.authority

The job trains you to stay switched on.

After enough years, sometimes that switch doesn’t turn off.

Crowds feel different. People feel different. Home feels different. Even the things you know should matter don’t always hit the same.

You’re still functioning.

But functioning and living aren’t always the same thing.

Take care of yourself.
Take care of those around you. by @influence.over.authority

Some of the best leadership happens when nobody is watching.

It’s the conversations at 2 AM. The extra five minutes after a shitty call. The advice you didn’t have to give. The young cop you refused to give up on when everyone else had.

You might think you’re just doing your job.

But somewhere along the way, you’re becoming a part of somebody else’s story.

And here’s the thing about real leadership…

You don’t always get to see the impact you make. You don’t get a notification when someone remembers your advice ten years later. You don’t get an award when someone becomes a better cop, a better leader, or a better person because of you.

Sometimes you never find out.

But that doesn’t mean it didn’t matter.

So keep showing up. Keep investing in your people. Keep giving a shit.

Because long after the uniform comes off, the impact you made will still be there.

And to the sergeants who never realized how much they meant to us… thank you.

RANK IS WORN. RESPECT IS EARNED.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

There’s something heartbreaking about realizing you were living through some of the best moments of your life and didn’t even know it.

You were just trying to get through the day.

Stressed about work. Frustrated with people. Worried about things that seemed so important at the time.

And then the years passed.

People you once saw every day became people you haven’t spoken to in years. Places that once felt like a second home became places you no longer belong. Conversations you thought you’d have a thousand more times turned out to be some of the last.

And somewhere along the way, life quietly changed.

Nobody told you that was the last time everyone would be together. Nobody warned you that those ordinary days would become memories you’d hold onto for the rest of your life.

That’s the part that gets me.

We never really know what we’re going to miss until it’s already behind us.

And maybe that’s why it’s so important to slow down every once in a while. To look around. To appreciate the people who are still here and the life we’re fortunate enough to be living.

Because someday, the things keeping you up at night won’t matter anymore.

But the time you spent worrying about them?

You’ll never get that back.

Don’t spend your life missing the present, only to spend the rest of it wishing you could return to the past.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

At some point, you have to ask yourself a hard question.

Are you actually happy, or have you just gotten really good at doing what everyone expects of you?

It’s easy to lose yourself trying to be everything to everyone. The dependable one. The provider. The problem solver. The person who always shows up, always says yes, and never complains.

And somewhere along the way, you forget to ask yourself what YOU want.

There’s nothing wrong with putting others first. But there is something wrong with believing your own happiness should always come last.

You can be a good person, love your family, work hard, and still choose yourself sometimes.

That doesn’t make you selfish. It makes you human.

You deserve to enjoy the life you’re working so damn hard to build.

NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE YOU.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

SOME OF YOU ARE GOING TO BURN YOURSELVES OUT TRYING TO FIX A PLACE THAT WILL NEVER LOVE YOU BACK.

And the hardest part?

You’re doing it for the right reasons.

You care about your people. You take pride in your work. You see what could be better, and it drives you absolutely insane watching problems go unaddressed.

But somewhere along the way, your commitment turned into an obligation you never actually agreed to.

You started measuring your worth by how many problems you could solve, how many people you could help, and how much bullshit you could absorb.

And now, even when you’re home, you’re still carrying the job.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth.

Your department existed before you got there. And it will exist long after you’re gone.

That doesn’t make you replaceable as a person. It means your identity, your happiness, and your peace were never supposed to depend on an organization.

Give a shit. Fight for your people. Challenge the status quo. Leave things better than you found them.

But stop confusing caring deeply with carrying everything.

Because the people waiting for you at home deserve more than whatever is left of you after the job takes everything else.

YOU CAN LOVE THE JOB WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOURSELF TO IT.

RANK IS WORN. RESPECT IS EARNED.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

Somewhere along the way, we made leadership more complicated than it ever needed to be.

We started worrying more about politics, appearances, promotions, and protecting our own asses than the people standing right in front of us.

And then we have the audacity to wonder why nobody trusts leadership anymore.

Here’s the part some people need to hear.

If your people are afraid to come to you, you’ve failed them.

If they’ll go to war for you, but you won’t go to bat for them, you’ve failed them.

If you’re more concerned about how your decisions look to the people above you than how they affect the people below you, you’ve forgotten who you’re supposed to be leading.

And if the only reason people follow you is because they have to, you’re not leading a damn thing.

You’re managing compliance.

Leadership isn’t about making everyone happy. It’s not about avoiding accountability, lowering standards, or letting people do whatever the hell they want.

It’s about giving enough of a shit to have the hard conversations, make the unpopular decisions, and stand beside your people when doing so might cost you something.

Because anybody can claim to care about their people when it’s convenient.

The real test is whether you still give a shit when it isn’t.

Your rank might give you authority over someone.

It will never guarantee their respect.

Rank is worn. Respect is earned.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it until I die…

RANK IS WORN. RESPECT IS EARNED.

A title gives you authority. It doesn’t automatically make you a leader.

You can be appointed to a position. You can be handed a badge, stripes, bars, or stars. You can have the final say in every decision.

But none of that means your people respect you.

Leadership isn’t about how many people have to listen to you. It’s about how many would choose to follow you even if they didn’t have to.

Your rank might make you their boss.

But your actions determine whether you’re their leader.

And if the only reason people follow you is because they have to, you’re confusing compliance with leadership.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY

RANK IS WORN. RESPECT IS EARNED. by @influence.over.authority

Some of the people who have made the biggest impact on my life never had any authority over me.

They were the ones who challenged my thinking. Questioned my decisions. Called me out when I needed it. And sometimes told me things I didn’t particularly want to hear.

Not every conversation was comfortable. Not every disagreement ended with someone changing their mind.

But looking back, I have a lot more respect for the people who were willing to have those conversations than the ones who simply told me what I wanted to hear.

That’s something I think we’ve lost sight of.

We’ve become so concerned about offending someone, damaging a relationship, or being disliked that sometimes we forget what it actually means to care about the people around us.

You can disagree with someone and still respect them. You can challenge someone without looking down on them. And you can care about someone without agreeing with everything they do.

The people around us influence who we become, whether we realize it or not.

Surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to challenge you. And be the kind of person who cares enough to do the same for them.

Because years from now, you probably won’t remember every compliment someone gave you.

But you might never forget the conversation that changed the way you saw yourself.

RANK IS WORN. RESPECT IS EARNED.

INFLUENCE OVER AUTHORITY by @influence.over.authority

Somewhere along the way, the job you loved became the place that started taking pieces of you.

And the hardest part?

You still love the job. You still love your people. You still believe in what you do.

You just miss who you were before it started wearing you down.

Don’t give so much of yourself to the job that there’s nothing left for the people waiting at home.

Influence Over Authority by @influence.over.authority

Nobody starts a job hoping to become the person who just watches the clock.

Most of us started with ambition, pride, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Somewhere along the way, something changed.

And sometimes, the hardest part isn’t the work itself.

It’s remembering how much you used to love it.
