New Promo video! Tales of the Iron Lane looks at migration to the borough through the route of the Surrey Iron Railway (SIR) as it ran through Merton and the impact on industrialisation. We examine the role of slavery and the East India Company in bringing wealth into the company and links with both SIR and Merton. We've started the @insaaficic CiC Tales of the Iron Lane project which consists of walks and talks looking at the history of industrialisation and migration to #Merton. It's been lovely researching my local area and uncovering stories that show there has been a presence of African and South Asian folk as well as Roma communities in the borough for hundreds of years. With so many false narratives being peddled about our histories and ties to this country it's so vital that we excavate and profile this is all as a matter of urgency. Our presence in the UK is a deeply storied and nuanced that that goes beyond post independence and push and pull immigration factors. We need to know about Fatima Quasheebaw a servant to Emma Hamilton the lover of Lord Nelson who lived in Merton Place in 1801, we need to know about Thomas Mathews known as 'Black Tom' who worked at the Stableblock at Mitcham Hall again in the early 18th Century and was a free man. When the St Georges and Union Jack flags went up last year in the borough - myself and others set up @mertonagainstracism to challenge these in a way that was reactive but necessary. I know at a local level we also need to be doing the deeper work of telling these stories and challenging myths which are becoming so persuasive. There are still a few places left for the second walk this Saturday 27th June 11-2pm and for the two talks which will be a bit more of a deep dive into the history of industry and migration into the area on Tuesday 30th June at Colliers Wood Library 6pm and Mitcham Library 3rd July again at 6pm. These and the walk on Saturday can be booked in the Eventbrite link and the bio: https://lnkd.in/eKXbibUi (Please note there are no actual pictures of Fatima and Thomas from this time so we have to use similar pictures from this era to approximate what they would have looked like.) #BlackHistory #SouthAsianHistory #GRTHistoryMonth #merton #mertonhistory #migrationhistory #unityindiversity❤️ by @insaaficic
Lovely first Tales of the Iron Lane led by @saqibdeshmukh last Saturday and we have one more walk left this weekend Sat 27th 11-2pm from #ColliersWood tube station. If you can't make the walk then there are free talks which will be a bit more of a deep dive into the history of industry and migration into the area on Tuesday 30th June at Colliers Wood Library 6pm and Mitcham Library 3rd July again at 6pm. These and the walk on Saturday can be booked in the Eventbrite links in our bio. #merton #mertonhistory #migrationhistory #historyofmerton #unityindiversity❤️ by @insaaficic
'If you sit in a bath of pineapple chunks, it can kill you. That's well documented.' Karl Pilkington These are the largest pineapples I have seen outside a standard house in London and this is in Mitcham! I know that there were farms and orchards locally but these don't grow natively in this country (except in hothouses). For more daft reflections on tropical fruit outside suburban houses and the history of Colliers Wood and Mitcham told through the metaphor of the Surrey Iron Railway please join us on the walks and talks over the next two Saturdays 11-2pm and at Colliers Wood and Mitcham Libraries on 3rd June and 3rd July respectively. Details to book are in the bio #merton #mertonhistory #migrationhistory #historyofmerton #unityindiversity❤️ by @insaaficic
