Being immersed in all aspects of nature, and especially the water here, you get a first hand feel for being a part of something so much larger than yourself.

@key_10_ brings up a topic that is so important to nearly every aspect of life in these islands from sustainability to food security - small farms. It doesn’t take much to look back at the history of Hawaii and the population that was once supported here to realize that we have a lot more potential than just a tourist destination.

There is something about seeing our home from a different perspective that never ceases to breath a fresh sense of appreciation into my love for this place.

This beautiful photo by @katiewinkhi is made all the more beautiful by the fact that there is no location, no hints at where this was taken, and those of us who know just simply know and that’s enough. by @instantsmagazine

It’s been talked about numerous times before, including at conferences here in Hawaii, but what do you all think about creating a “green fee” or “eco-tax” that tourists would pay to help offset some of the damage to our oceans, wastewater systems, trails, etc. that is caused by large numbers of visitors?

The other day when I was hiking in some of the valleys near where I grew up, I was confronted on such a personal level by the damage that location tagging and “sharing” places on social media has done to the Island where I was born and raised and that I am proud to call home. I recall visiting that same coastline as a child and learning about the significance of the history that is so much a part of what makes it special from an uncle who was also raised on this coastline before it had highways connecting it to the larger towns. As a teenager I would go there for some peace and quiet or just to watch the two or three people who were out in the water surfing. Even just a couple of years ago, I remember hearing the hunting stories of some of the boys I grew up with who would camp out and hunt pigs in the more remote areas. However, when I was hiking there the other day, the people I bumped into were from New York, Seattle, and LA, and spent their time taking selfies with landmarks they had zero understanding of.

I understand the desire to share a place that is so special, but before social media I think sharing held a different and more substantial meaning. If a place was shared with someone not from Hawaii, it was because they had earned the respect of someone who was from here to such a degree that they were gifted the insight into a beautiful place.

It seems that nowadays a lot of that respect has been lost with the willingness to divulge a location to an audience of followers who have no personal connection or love for the place being exposed. Hawaii is unlike any other place on the planet, which I think is recognized by foreigners and residents alike. The difference is that there is plenty of beauty to go around, but not all of the places need to be in a virtual tourist brochure.

The simple solution: don’t tag your location. Don’t mention your location. by @instantsmagazine
