This week I was at the Capitol to advocate for the City of El Paso in the Texas 88th legislative session.

I was able to meet with Appropriations, the Office of the Secretary of State, the Land Commissioner, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Natural Resources and Economic Development, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Film Commission, Texas Travel & Tourism, Airbnb Government affairs and our El Paso Delegation to ensure that District 5’s voice is fully heard.

Special thank you to Senator Blanco, State Representative Eddie Morales, State Representative Claudia Ordaz, State Representative Joe Moody, State Representative Lina Ortega, and State Representative Mary Gonzalez, our amazing City Staff, the El Paso Chamber, the County of El Paso and the nearly 90 delegates who traveled and pushed for El Paso with a united voice.

This morning I joined @borissancheztv on @cnn to discuss the efforts the City of El Paso is doing as we prepare the lifting the title 42.

Public safety for El Pasoans and migrants is our main priority.

Our City staff, Office of Emergency Management, our NGO partners and other agencies are working around the clock to ensure El Pasoans and those coming to the United States are safe and treated in the most humane way. by @isabel_agentofchange

This morning, I joined @cnn Fredricka Whifield‘s Morning Newsroom to discuss the Humanitarian Crisis in El Paso. I have been sounding the alarm for months on this issue. I’m a big proponent of working proactively and not reactively. That is why I have been focused on getting all possible resources to El Paso whether it be from the Federal Government or the State. I have urged the Mayor of the City El Paso Oscar Leeser and our County Judge Ricardo Samaniego to call for an Emergency Disaster Declaration so that we can obtain all possible resources from the State.

Title 42 is set to lift in just a couple of days, I don’t think we are prepared to process the influx of migrants that will be entering our community. Our staff is tasked, CBP is tasked, our local resources are tasked. Without funds ahead of time, we cannot provide the needed resources to ensure that everyone is treated in the most humane way. This is not safe for El Paso, this is not safe for the migrants, it is not sustainable for the City of El Paso.

I don’t know what needs to happen for the Mayor and County Judge to call for an Emergency Disaster Declaration. Disaster Declaration doesn’t mean we are a failure as a community. We have proven to be able to rise to the occasion but with these unprecedented numbers and not getting advanced funding and resources. I’m afraid this crisis will turn into a catastrophe. Municipalities should not have to be using our local taxpayers dollars to fund upfront costs for a Federal Government crisis.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause.
