People so often ask me about the process of learning operatic repertoire and although it’s different for everyone, this is what my process looks like. Here’s some accompagnato recitative (the part of opera that explains plot and events) for an opera in which I’m covering this summer at @longboroughfestivalopera Here we see Orlando having just murdered the woman he loves after being sent mad by envy. For every opera we as singers must of course learn the notes and the words by heart but we also have to know the exact pronunciation (IPA) and the meaning of the words… no matter what language the opera is written in! My opera scores always look a bit unhinged and have no end of strange things written all over them 😂🤪 Recorded by @capinskirecordings @london.recording.days with Paul McKenzie on piano. by @itslydiashariff
I’ve been having fun being an evil witch (onstage) with @englishtouringopera these past few weeks. Came back from gorgeous Snape Maltings last night and am now in Devon ahead of tomorrow’s show. There are still a couple of dates left on our tour! What an absolute group of huns to have been having such witchy fun with!! 🧙 🎃 👻 Dido and Aeneas - Henry Purcell Conductor - @alex.robinsonmusic Director - @rebeccameltzerartist Designer - @alexxberry Photographer - @richard_h_smith Assistant Director- @oscarsimms_ Assistant Conductor- @_claudiafuller_ Staff Director - @han_calascione Repetiteur - @chadvindin Stage Manager - @farfetchedbonnie Dido - @samanthajeanprice Aeneas - @m_lafferty96 Belinda/1st Witch - @atkinsonizzy Sorceress - @itslydiashariff 👋 2nd Woman/2nd Witch - @alexandralmeier Sailor - @guyelliott_ Spirit - @kieronconnorvalentine Ensemble - @jono_eyers @binnysupinyang @danielgraybelltenor @peterlidbetter by @itslydiashariff
I actually really relate to old Erda here, because I also hate to be woken by a man asking annoying questions that have already been answered by my norns. Here’s Erda’s warning (Weiche, Wotan, Weiche) from my recent performance at @internationalvocalcompetition with the wonderful @franhills5678 ♥️ by @itslydiashariff

Here’s a poem I wrote with my 5am thoughts by @itslydiashariff
Mezzo-soprano Lydia Shariff and collaborative pianist Francesca Lauri will blend lullabies, love songs, poetry, opera and jazz in a journey across cultures and centuries tracing women’s voices, stories and songs carried along the Silk Road and beyond. From Baroque opera and Persian poetry to Urdu ghazals, Armenian lullabies, jazz and contemporary works, this recital brings together diverse musical traditions connected by a shared language of memory, longing and hope. Audiences are invited to ponder how music from different places can unexpectedly speak to each other, and how a song written hundreds of years ago can still feel completely alive today. This will be the final instalment of our epic musical journey across the Silk Roads. 12 Dec. Save the date, and get your tickets via the link in our bio. #worldheartbeat #nineelms #embassygardens #silkroads by @itslydiashariff
Currently deep in the depths of rehearsals for Dido and Aeneas with @englishtouringopera but I’m looking ahead to coming private and public recitals this season. I can’t wait to sing more Sondheim (and others!!) and to antagonise my audiences with songs like this 😘 💅 Here’s a throwback to last autumn with @salonopera See www.LydiaShariff.com for public performance dates and come on down to listen to some glorious music. 💃🏼 by @itslydiashariff
