Collections of short stories round a theme, by different authors, are always going to be variable in quality and appeal, and I try to remember that when setting out on reading one. Some stories will hit that sweet spot, others will miss by a mile. Some authors you already know, and you have high expectations - only to find the famous name basically half-arsed it. Others are new to you and a delightful surprise. The Secret Romantic's Book of Magic, to my surprise, didn't follow that pattern. The names I knew (Katherine Arden, Megan Bannen) submitted delightful stories. A.G. Slatter, who I didn't previously know, has inspired me to seek out her novel length books, and Eliza Chan's story was enchanting and memorable. Katherine, Megan, Angela, Eliza... you are the stars of the show.

But... sheesh. There was also much dross amongst the gold. Formulaic, unintelligible, agenda-driven, cliched, DNF-level dross.

Grumpy-sunshine never felt so... prickly.

Prince Brynn of Boggart may be oversized, but he's met his match in Willa Squabb, Sea Pixie seamstress with a runaway royal secret.

The Pincushion Princess by Josie Johnston - available on Amazon!

Grumpy sunshine, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, royal monster fairy romantasy has never been so much fun!

It’s never easy being a fashion-forward, dress-designing, runaway-royal Sea Pixie. In Boggart.

Now Willa Squabb has even more problems. Like, how to save her Fashion Wagon from a mud-filled ditch, along with her fabrics and her precious pattern books. Like, the seven-foot stuffed shirt Boggart border guard who is trying to arrest her, for littering.

Like, not falling in love with him.

Prince Brynn of Boggart has tried to tell this small-but-annoying female who he is. Twice now.

But every time he looks at her, Brynn forgets himself. He forgets he’s supposed to be guarding Boggart’s borders from marauding were-goblins. He forgets he’s the outsized, huge-eared, humourless one in the family. He forgets everything—

Except that he wants to kiss Willa Squabb. Maybe forever.

But with his brother’s coronation in the offing, royal families have gathered from around the realms.

Now Willa is panicking, and packing up her patterns. And Brynn must swerve from border patrol, to protecting the wasp-like true love of his life.

Arren of the Boggarts has inherited his father’s crown…

Along with an awkward curse, and only one solution. If he’s going to break the enchantment and save his kingdom, he must travel to the World of Men and marry a she-human.

A she-human who will give him daughters.

Meanwhile in Middlesex, Milly Morris is juggling cupcake castles and eviction notices. When a six foot six hunk of gorgeousness, muscle and… horns arrives at her bakery and pops the question, she doesn’t know whether to kiss the man… male… boggart—

Or lock herself in the cold store.

Now King Arren must convince Milly he’s the boggart for her and break the curse.

All without breaking her heart.

It's... boggart. Not bogart. Two g's. One is a six-foot-something silver skinned, lonely-hearted romantasy monster cinnamon roll hero. The other's a dead actor.
