My best guy by @j9k9_training

When we take away reactivity with management and training, we have to recognize that our dog has the ability/need/desire to be intense about something and we can find alternative outlets for all that passion. by @j9k9_training

Day Camp is back! A full day of enrichment, exercise, managed play with well-matched buddies, rest and dogging it up on private rural acreage. Pick up and drop off in NW Portland Mondays and every other Tuesday. by @j9k9_training

The Great Pacific Northwest just came home to our wet misty and magical climate after a lovely summer and sunny dry fall. The first week can be a little jarring and keep people inside but I think it’s the best time of the year to take your dogs to all the places that have been too busy for them.

Some rainy season tips for dog guardians:

🧥🥾invest in breathable water proof gear that you wear over your clothes. Pants with side zippers, a rain coat and a wide brimmed hat. Water proof and breathable hiking boots. OR bring several layers so you can swap out as one gets wet. Wear gardening or work gloves.

🐩 put coats on your dog when walking in the rain

💅 Create a drying station for your dogs. Set up an xpen by the door with a cot bed and fresh dry towels. Let your dog hang out in here until the wet wicks off them. Get a dog dryer like the groomers have and force dry your dog after outings.

🍄 mushroom, shed or truffle hunt with your dog. Get out there and enjoy what this magical season has to offer.

🌈 remember, you’re going to like it once you’re in it, get your gear on and get after it!

Do you have any tips to add? by @j9k9_training

I saw Elva slip under this gate yesterday. A large part of maintaining Elva’s QOL is giving her lots of stomp around the yard time. Often by herself. She trots around grabbing different toys, fighting her tire, and doing the rounds smelling the tracks of the wildlife that visited the night prior. She is non-reactive and regulated outside. I don’t want to take this away from her.

When I say I do not allow my dogs to do things, what I mean is I make it impossible. Elva is not allowed to go under this gate. I quickly considered the different paths I could take to train her to not go under the gate when I’m not present and none of them were as quick and easy and fail safe as taking a couple hours to modify the gate and take that option away.

Animals need to be properly contained. That is actually the answer to keeping a dog within a boundary. Yes, there is training that can occur to make that more likely but it can break down over time or under the right circumstances. And training is not without fallout. Using a contrived reinforcer in this situation would potentially change Elva from this easy and pleasant mood she’s in while in the yard to a “working” state. Using a punisher could create more stress and avoidance in our yard than I’d like her to experience while she’s roaming her acreage, also moving her away from an easy and pleasant mood. Putting up a physical barrier will be easy for her to accept and move on from. There’s nothing she really wants out there, she just noticed it was an option to explore.

This is the first time I’ve seen her slip under the gate and we immediately put management in place so it won’t happen again.

I’m strongly using the Royal We, Aaron pretty much did all of the work. by @j9k9_training

Always a great time being out West! #Oregon #Highenergydogs by @j9k9_training

A common approach many “reactive dog” guardians make is to try to train their dog during big loud lungey reactions without doing any of the ground work. But that is not the right time to address reactivity. When a dog is routinely reactive to stimuli, their routine and environment must change so they are no longer rehearsing those behaviors. And then several things need to happen before the dog can successfully be in that environment again.

Sometimes all it takes to stop reactive behaviors is to bring high value treats on walks and feed your dog near triggers, if this worked for you great! If you’ve been trying this for at least 2 weeks without the reactions ceasing, then you’re going to need more of a game plan. by @j9k9_training

Things I’m teaching in me and @loveyourchucho group online class about managing reactivity: when to use management to keep dogs sub threshold as much as possible, what skills to train and when to use those skills around real life triggers as well as what reinforcement is maintaining the behaviors. See the crate back there? If I want to leave him in the car he goes in there so he’s not rehearsing barking at dogs passing by. Do you cover your dogs eyes to avoid triggers? I give you permission to! by @j9k9_training

A message to students and anyone who has reached out to me recently. by @j9k9_training

Elva and I entered a mock trial today for Up Dog with the Columbia County Disc Dog club. We practiced for the first time last night. This little doggy loved it! This is a super fun activity to do and just Elva’s speed. Now I just need to learn to throw better! by @j9k9_training

Playing outside on uneven ground! My leg is probably 85% back. So wonderful to get back to the things I love. by @j9k9_training

Who needs some back up? I’ll let Dave know he needs to start bringing treats on walks and stop yanking the dog back. I’ll tell Steven that he can simply give a known trained cue rather than nagging the dog. I’ll coach Mark on how to use a baby gate before opening the front door. It’s like couples therapy except I don’t have to hide that you’re right and I’m fully on your side. by @j9k9_training
