What I would’ve given to see an image like this growing up. To see an image of a fat person in all her glory would’ve been life-changing. Instead, most of the times the images of fat people I saw back then were mostly from before-after weight loss ads or an infographic in a clinic about obesity or an evil character on tv/films. It was then ingrained in my brain that I would only ever be those images. But no big deal, right?Except that if that’s the only image you see as a fat kid, you grew up believing that you would always be a person who does not deserve to be in the centre of attention or a spotlight. You would learn that you will never be the main character of the school play, or the singer placed in the middle of the choir team. You’re always at the back somewhere with low light that no one pays attention to. You will only ever be the supporting act to other main characters.How toxic is that, that children learn very early in their life about how in everything that they do, their looks play major role in the kind of opportunities they will get? Imagine how many fat kids out there who are as talented and capable as their peers, who are as deserving but seen as not attractive enough, or too big, or too heavy to be given equal chance, sitting by themselves, dreaming that they would one day lose weight to finally be seen as who they are and what they are passionate about. To be seen as worthy to be seen.This idea that they need to change themselves to be worthy of opportunities is also often echoed by the adults in their family. “You have to lose weight so that you can finally be pretty!” or “You have such a beautiful face, you just need to lose weight!” or “when you lose weight, all heads will turn once you enter the stage.”Yes I am projecting, because that was my life experience. But I also know my experiences being a fat kid are shared by so many. Our children deserve better. Enough with the sexualising, dehumanising and denying fat children opportunities. 2016 throwback trend but making it into a post. 2016 Far was LIVING. Some highlights:1. Visited the town I grew up in. Kuantan always has my heart.2. Tried ATV for the first time, felt pretty badass.3. Went snorkelling at Perhentian Island. Put on my first pair of bikini and felt so good4. First training work with Projek Layang-layang on child sexual abuse5. Awarded with a one-year Fulbright grant @macee_fulbright We’re going to the U.S. baby!6. Made it to the newspaper! 7. Visited Cambodia to see Angkor Wat, which is only the largest religious monument in the world no big deal 8. Gotta have my vitamin sea in Penang island9. Got a boob cupcake from a stranger, immediately wanted to lick it10. Finally in the US of A repping Malaysia in Stanford uni!11. Seattle Hempfest was my introduction to the city 12. Made a new bestie who was my next door meowbour which immediately solved my loneliness in a new place. Miss you Fritz 🐈‍⬛ 13. Got my Halloween costume from Targèt14. Just a bunch of fat pumpkins chillin at the pumpkin patch15. Winter started in Washington DC for a conference, photo taken outside the White House with a friend whose face I cut off purposely lol sorry John!16. I think I pulled off the Presidential look17. Experiences my first ever snow in Harvard while visiting friends ❄️⛄️ 18. Also conquered MIT elegantly, obviously19. Did the ball drop on New Year’s eve in NYC, NYPD officer wanted to be in the photo. Still ACAB though.20. I mean this picture is just good by @fatcatfar

At the end of every year I’d sit down with myself and reflect on what the year has been, think about where I was few years ago and where I stood at the moment, and cry. I cry for the older versions of me that have gone everywhere looking for belonging, for safety and for love. Cry for those versions of me that tried the best and saw the worst. Cry for the versions of me that made the same mistakes over and over again. Cry for the versions of me that have changed. Cry for the versions of me that have remained gentle. Cry for the versions of me that pushed through. Cry for the versions of me that have met so many beautiful souls. Cry for the versions of me that have been a beautiful soul to others. Cry for the versions of me that have dreamed of what seemed to be impossible.Cry for the versions of me that I am ashamed of, want to hide.Cry for the versions of me that I am proud of.Cry for the versions of me that are silly, playful and ridiculous.Cry for the versions of me I have yet to meet.I hope I’ll continue to cry. by @fatcatfar
