According to her, the term “people of color” creates a sense of unity that does not always exist in practice. She argues that while other minority groups often benefit from Black consumer spending and support, that support is not always returned when issues affecting Black Americans are at the center of the conversation.

Her comments come as social media continues debating economic dependence, ownership, community investment, and whether Black consumers should be spending more intentionally within their own communities.
