“Rights of Passage” - Back in May, I had the privilege of showing this series at @pause_off_artist_collective. For six months, I explored the abandoned tunnels of the Cincinnati subway system, the largest of their kind in the world. A few individuals joined me for a semi-guided tour and agreed to have their portraits taken, sharing stories of their own “rights of passage” (things they felt like had to happen to get to where they are now). Some were simpler than others, but all of them wound up here: a place not too deep, not too far, and from a not-so-distant past. Most people drive over it daily without realizing that over one hundred years ago, the city of Cincinnati had a much larger story to tell. I know these people will hold stories much larger. They helped me lug my studio equipment a combined 25+ miles, spent a combined 30+ hours, and posed with a smile in musty, underground air. Accompanying these, there sits about 30 minutes of interview footage that I intend on editing into a mini-doc when life settles down a bit more. The last four photos in this slideshow are credited to @reilly.ackermann (B&W) and Michael Maurer. - 1. Cecelia Favorito. Industrial designer. Moving to the PNW to continue finding work in her field. 2. Reilly Ackermann. Pursuing a Master’s in Journalism at Northwestern University. 3. Brian Davis. He works at the IRS by day, but plans to move to a major US city to pursue jazz guitar and bass full time. 4. Lucas. A fashion design graduate who recently left his position after finding out he was training his AI replacement. 5. The Explorer 100 dingy. - B&W 35mm format (@rxillyack) 6. The tricky descent into the tunnels 7. @avalu_jpeg and I setting up a flash unit. - Michael Maurer 8. Interview with Cecelia 9. Setting up at Brighton Station . northside photowalks. i don’t know where i’d be without you really. probably a lot lonelier and a lot more lost. you showed me i could make friends in my adult life. you showed me photography wasn’t really about photography. you showed me that the gear doesn’t matter, the shots don’t matter, and story doesn’t matter if you don’t really care. it doesn’t matter how many aesthetic posts you put on instagram, or how much of your work you actually decide to put into the world. do it for yourself. do it for the people you love. that’s all it has to be. keep moving. keep shooting. keep working even when technology advances so fast it makes your work feel useless. keep dancing. - [kurt vonnegut talking about when he tells his wife he’s going out to buy an envelope] “Oh, she says well, you’re not a poor man. You know, why don’t you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I’m going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And, see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And, and ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don’t know. The moral of the story is, is we’re here on Earth to fart around. And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And, what the computer people don’t realize, or they don’t care, is we’re dancing animals.” by @jack.schad
leaving cincinnati sooner than expected in six days after six years, come by my place this saturday around five for a see-you-later bash, DM for address :) - usually pretty bad at celebrating goodbyes. i don’t need a billboard to tell you i love you. by @jack.schad
cowboys and brutalism, canon powershot A720IS - in camera filters are normally so corny, but the b&w simulation on this 20 year old CCD sensor actually has some pretty nice contrast. only edits done are cropping. by @jack.schad
