We're living through one of the most exciting moments in space exploration while simultaneously risking the science that makes it possible.

That's the contradiction.

We're sending astronauts around the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.

At the same time, NASA's science programs were facing a proposed 47% budget cut.

Jack Kiraly of The Planetary Society says those cuts wouldn't just affect future missions.

They would impact the scientists, instruments, and spacecraft behind the discoveries we're making right now.

Congress ultimately rejected the proposal with rare bipartisan support.

But by then, thousands of NASA employees had already left, believing the cuts were inevitable.

Space exploration doesn't happen because of rockets alone.

It happens because people invest in the science that makes every mission possible.

NASA is exploring the Moon like never before.

At the same time, it almost lost nearly half of its science budget.

Jack Kiraly, Director of Government Relations at The Planetary Society, says a proposed 47% cut to NASA's science programs would have affected everything from Artemis missions to spacecraft exploring our solar system.

Congress ultimately rejected the proposal with overwhelming bipartisan support.

But not before thousands of NASA employees left, believing those cuts were inevitable.

Space exploration isn't just about rockets.

It's about the scientists, engineers, and missions that make every new discovery possible.

The future of space doesn't just depend on technology.

It depends on whether we're willing to invest in it.

What astronauts just discovered on the Moon, we've never seen before.

Jack Kiraly says the Artemis crew expected to see one or two micrometeorite impacts on the Moon.

They saw six.

That discovery could change how scientists think about building a permanent human presence on the lunar surface.

It's one thing to study the Moon with satellites.

It's another to have astronauts watching it unfold in real time.

Every mission answers old questions.

The best ones uncover new ones nobody expected to ask.

When you look at Earth from deep space, there are no borders, no countries, and no divisions.

As Jack Kiraly from the Planetary Society explains, astronauts call this the "Overview Effect," a profound psychological shift that reminds us we are one single species sharing a tiny rock in the universe.

Unlike the Apollo missions of the past, the upcoming Artemis crew represents a broad, diverse swath of humanity, including the first international astronaut, the first Black American, and the first woman going to deep space.

They aren’t just going to the moon for one country or one ideology. They are representing all of us.

Just a few moments of love, laughter, good food, and silliness (or all of the above) over these past 365 days of @snacklikethis

What a joy it is to share this life with my wife, Camila. I look forward to every adventure and lazy weekend just the same when I know I get to spend it with her. On her birthday, I hope she knows just how special she is and how much light she brings to the world.

Happy Camila Day to all who celebrate! by @zerlinamaxwell

This week Congress overwhelmingly passed bipartisan legislation in support of #NASA and its science programs. Huge congrats to @billnye, @planetarysociety and the incredible advocates, volunteers, organizational partners, and supporters who made that possible. Big shout out to my friend, @jack_kiraly for his passion and dedication.

I was going to post about this the other day but wanted to wait for this shot during #ArtemisII Rollout! #space #2space4earth #adastra taken in Vehicle Assembly Building by @zerlinamaxwell

🚨 NASA Needs Your Help 🚨

On Feb. 7, 530 highly skilled staff at the Jet Propulsion Lab were laid off in connection to proposed cuts to NASA's science programs. These cuts have already seriously delayed priority space missions and layoffs that will have rippling effects to the space workforce. And JPL is not the only NASA center affected. Layoffs and work stoppages have affected many of NASA's centers and partners.

If you're a resident of the United States, we need you to take action to reverse these cuts and call on Congress to pass a budget that supports the pioneering work of the Science Mission Directorate.

Now that 2023 comes to a close, I am reflecting on a year full of tremendous personal and professional growth.

To sum up my 2023…

🌌 I started my dream job with @planetarysociety

👥 Over 100 people came to our annual advocacy day I organized with my incredible colleagues

🛫 I flew over 36,000 miles (equivalent to flying around the world and then some!)

🗼 @snacklikethis and I spent a week exploring and visiting family in Paris

🎸 The boys and I played a kick-ass live karaoke show

🗳️ Many of my amazing friends were elected to public office

🐕 Camila and I welcomed Laika🐾 into our lives

And between each of these were moments with friends and family that made 2023 the year to beat. I am grateful for everyone who made this year full of love, kindness, and joy. There are too many to tag on social media, but I appreciate everyone who was a part of my life this year.

We enter 2024 facing many new and familiar challenges, but I have hope in the collective power of humanity to solve our biggest problems and reach for the stars. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2024! by @zerlinamaxwell
