I’m excited to finally announce the release of my first ever book: The Counterpoint Guitar Method with @fundamentalchanges ! 🍾 🙌 📕

The link is in my bio and story!

I’ve spent the last 6 years figuring out how this book would look and the best way to teach guitar players how to take counterpoint methods straight from the piano and apply them to the guitar. Suffice to say, it’s quite surreal that it’s become reality. I’m confident this book will change the way guitarists look at harmony, melody, and rhythm through studying counterpoint. There’s plenty of information, example pieces, etudes, and over 200 audio examples that come with the physical book for you to dig into.

I’m looking forward to sharing some examples from the book over the coming weeks. Lastly, a big thank you to @timpettingale and Joseph for all their help and expertise getting this over the line!

I wrote this song years ago as a hybrid picking etude, and every-so-often, I bring it back into my warm-up routine hoping that I’m a little closer to unlocking its soul than the last time. I still feel so far away from making this piece sound like how want it to.

🔓 Side quest: I wanted to share something cool I had been practicing earlier in the year, and recently found time to transcribe.

This is Stephen Sondheim’s Being Alive, from his musical “Company“. This piece is built using a melody and a bassline written in different rhythmic subdivisions - a polyrhythm, so to speak! The bassline is a simple 8th note pattern, while the melody is played in quarter-note triplets. Otherwise called a 3-against-4 polyrhythm.

This creates two very independent parts that overlap nicely, but are no joke to play. Polyrhythms are strange because they create two separate pulses in the music that you need to balance correctly and convincingly. The bassline needs to be strong so that the floaty triplet-time melody above can weave in and out.

🎸 New Interview on Vivid Guitar

I recently caught up with guitarist, composer, and educator Jack Handyside (@jackhandyside) to talk about his approach to practice, creativity, and counterpoint.

In this interview, Jack shares insights on learning jazz standards deeply, keeping a practice journal, collecting small musical “seeds” for composition, and how exploring counterpoint can expand the way guitarists think about melody and harmony. He also talks about the gear he’s been using lately—including his @dangelicony Deluxe Mini DC, which has become his go-to guitar for gigs and sessions.

I scaled back on social media around December, and it’s been really useful for helping prioritise where my creative energy is going. Lots of fun things are happening behind the scenes (in real life), and I’m excited to share that stuff when it’s ready.

Anyway, here’s a fun piece from a musical I’ve been using to warm up before teaching. It’s deceptively challenging due to the 3:4 polyrhythms happening between the melody and the bass, but that’s the fun in it. Can you guess who composed it?

There are songs that stick around for years and you’re not always sure why. I wrote this song 4 years ago, and every so often, it comes back to teach me a new lesson. I’ve often found it tricky to coax the soul out of a song, even tunes or compositions I’ve played hundreds of times. The newest lesson was about keeping a stricter division between the role of pick and fingers when hybrid picking. If the fingers get too involved, the melody stutters and the song doesn’t flow properly. Like most of the videos I post, this isn’t a perfect performance. Perfect performances don’t teach you anything about yourself when you look back on them. Mistakes are another chance to learn and help document your creative journey, or the progression with a piece. This piece isn’t done with me, so you’ll likely hear it again one day - perhaps with a new revelation attached.
