Meet Melissa James — the creator and visionary behind Jail Birds.

With roots in musical theatre, dance, and circus, Melissa fuses multiple disciplines into one unforgettable experience. A former Dance Captain for iconic musicals Chicago, Hairspray, and Mamma Mia, she later transitioned into circus collaborating with the legendary Franco Dragone as both an artist and creative.

Having headlined stages across the Middle East, UK, Asia, Australia, and the USA, Melissa brings a global perspective and a deep love of storytelling to Jail Birds — a bold celebration of some of the world’s most innovative female circus acts.

Oh I’m the worst at social media. So, day late and a dollar short but these photos from @uliana_kiral perfectly capture me in @melrenayjames “Jailbirds”! I’m a mess but I’m a lot of fun! This show was an amazing cast of powerhouse performers and I was honored to spin some drunken cyr with them.. I’ve been training my whole life for this! by @jailbirdstheshow

Graceful as a cat, cunning as a fox, every move is calculated, precise and utterly silent. She is was not just ‘a’ thief, she was THE Thief. No Jail can truly cage this level of talent…

Would you risk getting locked in a cell with these women? 🖤🔥
Careful… some cages you don’t want to escape from.

Now I’ve had some time to process @jailbirdstheshow I’m still in shock at what we managed to create in such a short period of time. It still feels surreal and I’m trying to document and relive every moment of the creation process and performances because it truly was a magical time in my life. Forever grateful to the dream team behind me to make this happen… ❤️

I’m innocent, @jailbirdstheshow made me do it

It’s not every day you get asked to play a French dentist who seduces and murders her patients on stage by scalpel. What a blast to step into this absolutely insane role and to work with such a stellar team on and offstage. Thank you to all involved and @flyist.kid.in.town for 📸

Eight birds. One cage. Infinite fire. 🔥🖤

Opening night of JAIL BIRDS and these women came out swinging—bold, dangerous, electric.

They didn’t just open the show… they set it on fire. 🖤🔥

To everyone who came, supported, cheered, and felt something with us—thank you. This is only the beginning.
