In 2019, I used to work at Zara, doing stock in the back. When I had enough bread, I quit and bought a camera. Fast forward, it’s a surreal moment seeing my photos now exhibited at YD.

Huge thank you to @theremixproject @yorkdalestyle @_isthatmeg @suigeneriscass @abstractabel for the opportunity and support. Blessed to be showcased alongside so many talented photographers.

Check out the exhibit it’ll be up until the end of February! taken in Yorkdale Shopping Centre by @byanymeans_film

@playforever.ca x @ctjumpstart

In 2021, I was introduced to @playforever.ca through @pen.moodz, who told me about the incredible work they were doing across the city. One of the first initiatives I got to witness was their community basketball league. What stood out to me was the feeling of genuine community — the way coaches, particpants, and volunteers showed up for each other, and how something as simple as basketball became a tool for building confidence and purpose.

From that very first day, I knew I wanted to tell the stories and showcase the people who made me feel welcomed from the start. I hope this video does it justice.

Shout out to @ryanw.m_ whenever there’s a story to tell, he’s all in. This wouldn’t have come to life the way it did without him.

Created by @ryanw.m_ & @jamalamaj
Sound Mix: @_gluch
PA: a_sibs

#cinematography #communityfirst #jumpstart by @byanymeans_film

By Any Means is a mindset that I’ve had over the years. Especially as a first-generation Somali Canadian navigating responsibility and ambition at the same time. Sometimes that mindset creates pressure and sometimes pressure makes diamonds, and sometimes it breaks them.

What inspired me to write and direct this film was that very mindset and my own personal experience; juggling the feeling of wanting to build a legacy, take care of your fam, while still giving myself the permission to chase what i love throughout the process.

By Any Means is about doing what’s necessary to make shit happen, even when the path isn’t clear.

I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of the @cityofto , @underscorestudios_ , and most importantly my community, both in front of and behind the camera.

This film is for where I’m from, and for anyone who’s ever had to figure it out by any means necessary.

For the ones we love, BY ANY MEANS. taken in Jane and Finch by @byanymeans_film
