Soul of Scotland — First Fine Art Book Out Soon

POSTS STORIES REELS

The front cover of my first ever book — and the one you chose. Thank you 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I decided to call it Soul of Scotland because, for me, Scotland is so much more than a beautiful place to photograph. There’s something about its landscapes, weather, light and atmosphere that stays with you long after you leave.

As some of you will know, Soul of Scotland is also the name of my other page, where I share the places, stories and landscapes that make Scotland so special. Giving the book the same name felt like a natural way of bringing that world together with my own photography.

This book is my interpretation of Scotland — built from years of exploring, photographing and returning to the places that have inspired me most.

I’ve also included a little preview of my note from inside the book, which explains more about why photography became such an important part of my life and why Scotland ended up meaning so much to me.

It’s taken a huge amount of work, learning and probably far too much overthinking 😅 but it’s finally starting to feel real.

Soul of Scotland — First Collector Edition.

Nearly there. 📖 by @jamesalroca

Thrilled to have been featured in the Luxury Issue of @scottishfieldmag 🫶🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷

The feature follows my trip to Aubigny-sur-Nère for Les Fêtes Franco-Écossaises — an incredible celebration of the historic connection between Scotland and France.

As a French-British photographer, this one felt especially personal. Very proud to see my work featured in this edition. The festival was an incredible experience, and any Scotland fan would feel right at home in this town.

A huge thank you to Scottish Field for the feature, and of course to @tourisme_sauldre_et_sologne and @aubignysurnere for such a warm welcome and for making the experience possible 🫶🏻

Remember earlier this year when I asked whether I should create a photography book — and if I did, what it should be about?

I read through all your comments and amazing support, and one thing kept coming up again and again: Scotland.

To be honest, I was kind of expecting that. Over the last few years, I’ve absolutely loved photographing Scotland and all of its beauty, and so many of you have followed that journey with me.

So… I’ve been quietly working on something ever since.

My first fine art photography book is now almost finished. 📖🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I just need your help with one final decision:

Which image should be on the front cover?

1, 2, 3 or 4? 👇

The first edition will be a Collector Edition limited to just 100 copies worldwide.

Thank you so much for all your votes, comments and words of encouragement for the book. It genuinely means a lot 🫶🏻🙏

After 638 votes, we have a winner…

Number 2 — with 224 votes. 🥇

And honestly, I can see why. It’s one of my favourite images from recent years.

I was driving back from Durness when the conditions suddenly changed completely. The landscape went from relatively calm to this incredible mix of light, darkness and drama in what felt like no time at all.

Someone commented that they chose number 2 because “it IS Scotland” — and I think that sums it up perfectly.

For me, the image represents the journey, the road ahead, and that contrast Scotland does so beautifully: light and darkness, beauty and moodiness, almost a kind of yin and yang.

And in many ways, that’s exactly what the book is about — a journey through Scotland’s brighter, softer moments, but also its darker, wilder and more atmospheric side.

That said, I genuinely think any of the four could have been the front cover. They each represent a different side of Scotland.

But number 2 came out on top — so I think we’ve found the cover. 🫶🏻

Thank you for helping me choose it. by @jamesalroca

I need your honest opinion.

This year, I turn 30, and I’ve been thinking about creating my first photography book — a collection of the landscapes and moments from the last 10 years.

But I’m honestly not sure if I should.

So I wanted to ask you.

Should I do it?

And if I do — what would you want to see inside?

• Scotland only?
• Stories behind the images?
• More about my journey?
• Behind the scenes?

I’d love this to feel like something we build together.

I’ll be reading every comment.
