We are celebrating 16 years of marital bliss today. Whenever I think of Khalid I am overwhelmed by his love, care and goodness. I am blessed to partner with someone who loves me extravagantly and practically. To have grown more in love as we continue to build our lives together has been my great joy and honor. This is love.

I often wonder if how I feel is real. Marriage is sacrificial work, and still, it is all joy. In our talks about stressors and loving each other well we often reflect on the ease and beauty of our lives together. We have tension but don’t live in that place. We respond to each other rather than emotionally reacting. We honor each others feelings and experiences. We work hard to see each other fully.

The video above is just a little glimpse into the posture of everyday life. Please don’t mistake the fatigue for displeasure or the talk of duty as oppression. Our marriage is full of love and it is our great joy to love each other with everything we have.

And just like that twenty years have flown by! One thing about Khalid is that he’s going to love me extravagantly and do the most. In addition to the things we have already planned to celebrate our 20th anniversary, he did this. It felt silly but also it was a beautiful and gentle reminder of what love does. I am thankful to do life with a man who is committed to loving extravagantly and doing it gracefully. I would count this as my first real spring migration as a birder. I’ve seen so many new birds and have leaned into the beauty and mystery of seeking things that I didn’t even know previously existed. This for me is a spiritual practice. It’s developing my ability to notice, be present, be still and wonder. I am grateful to be a part of this community and to spend so much time in discovery in Central Park. It has been pure joy.

This is a Mourning Warbler, a bird I just learned about a week ago but have been hoping that I would see. Another lifer for me- who knew that there was so much to learn, so much to seek and so much to be found?

Jayda completed her first year at Howard and having her back home makes everything feel right. It reminded me of how much I’ve had to process the Hilldren getting older and how much we are still trying to figure out. I’d looked forward to being an empty nester but baybee I wasn’t prepared for the slow burn of them leaving one at a time.

About a month ago I experienced sudden hearing loss and I’ve had tinnitus since then. It’s been jarring to lose some of my functional hearing and the ringing in my ear has been frustrating. Apparently, this just happens sometimes and it just happened to me 🤷🏽‍♀️ the first two weeks I experienced the loss I wasn’t sure if I was making it up. Once I got an audio test and confirmed with my ENT what was going on, I’ve felt more gratitude than anything.

Dealing with the continual decay of our mortal bodies is hard. It’s also but sobering and just real. So hopefully my hearing returns and this ringing ends but even if it doesn’t, I’ll be ok.

The other piece of this ordeal is the work I’m doing to try and not spend all my money on tests and procedures that I thought should be covered by my insurance. I literally never thought about shopping around for tests and procedures and this has just been eye opening and enraging. Have any of yall dealt with hearing loss like this? Also, have you shopped around for medical procedures?

If you have spoken to me in the last couple of months you know that I’ve officially become a birder. This passion has grown slowly overtime as I’ve engaged with the practice. Ive gone from interest, to intrigue, to wonder to love and I’m appreciating what the process has done for my soul. Beauty and change bloom slowly and this process has helped me attend to that change. I’m thankful for the names of birds that I can rattle off and the wonder and appreciation that this is developing in me.

What has time in nature brought out in you?
