POSTS STORIES REELS

The first review for We’re Off to Carnaval is in and it is a glowing one indeed! Kirkus Reviews called it “A vibrant celebration of family, heritage, and community, this story employs Spanish words and phrases as it weaves Dominican culture into a rich visual tapestry.…” and “A colorful explosion of Afro-Latine joy.” (Full review at link in bio)

Many thanks to @rizzyfig for rendering Flor and her family, Carnaval characters and the DR so beautifully. And thanks to Stacey Barney and everyone at PRH nancy Paulsen books for helping me bring this story to life.

Pre-order available now at link in my bio. And if you order from @kindredstorieshtx you will get some fun goodies! by @jasminnemendez

These three 2026 Américas Award Commended Titles shine a light on moments of injustice and the individuals and communities who rose to meet them.

A Sea of Lemon Trees by @maria.d.aguila tells the story of twelve-year-old Roberto Alvarez, whose courage helped make history in the first successful school desegregation case in the United States. The Pecan Sheller by Lupe Ruiz Flores follows thirteen-year-old Petra through the pecan-shelling factories of Depression-era San Antonio, where Mexican American workers fought for dignity and survival. And The Story of My Anger by @jasminnemendez centers Yuli, a young Afro-Latina whose quiet rule-following gives way to powerful advocacy when her school attempts to erase the histories and voices of her community.

Together, these books remind us that resistance takes many forms, and that young people have always been at the center of it.

Stay tuned for more commended title spotlights!

The award is administered by the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (@claspprograms) and coordinated by both Tulane University's Stone Center for Latin American Studies (@tusclas) and the University of Arizona's Center for Latin American Studies (@uaz_clas). Happy Birthday TSOMA! One year ago today you were released out into the world. And oh what a year it’s been! From starred reviews to book awards, and from book events with librarians and young readers to fancy luncheons with Hollywood stars and the Obama Presidential Library I have felt the love and warmth of my community. Grateful to anyone and everyone who has bought, borrowed, shared, read, taught or promoted this book in anyway. I couldn’t do this without you.

In a time of book bans and censorship I hope Yuli’s story is a guidebook and inspiration for all young people to use their voice and their talents fo speak out and make a difference. Because the time to Act is Now! by @jasminnemendez

October recap photo dump. Audiobook recording for my next PB “We’re Off to Carnaval!” numerous Hispanic/Latine Heritage month events, muffins with mom, gorgeous sunrises, quiet nights on my patio, musicals with the fam, conversations and community building with some of my favorite poet friends, poetry workshops in Aspen, CO, voting with my girl, more school visits, Dia de Muertos fest and Halloween shenanigans. And from now on I will be forever known as Jasminne “Cornbread” Mendez (you had to be there). 😁☺️🫶🏾 This past month was busy busy but it was filled with the people and poetry I love and that make all the long days and achey joints worth it.

It’s now November…my birthday month! And I am looking forward to whatever this next year of life may bring. I was not supposed to make it this far. I was not supposed to live 20 years in this body that is trying to kill me on the daily. But I am here. I am STILL here. So…p’alante! by @jasminnemendez
