We share with sadness and regret that Allison DeFoor passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Born in 1953, J. Allison DeFoor, II was a member of the Jacksonville History Center board of directors from 2020 to 2024. Episcopal priest, prison minister, real estate salesman, prosecutor, elected judge and Monroe County sheriff, politician, attorney and ardent advocate for preservation, Allison was a seventh generation Floridian and Renaissance man who reinvented himself several times over. A perennial student of this state’s history, he authored a book about an ancestor, Odet Philippe: Peninsular Pioneer (Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History, 1998), and co-authored Florida Civil Procedure Forms (West Legal Publishing, 1989). All of us who knew him are richer for the experience. Alan J. Bliss, CEO, Jacksonville History Center by @jax_history

Did you know? Jacksonville's 904 area code began in 1965 when Florida's original 305 area code was split, giving the northern half of the state its own separate code. The Marjorie and Jesse A. Budd Jr. Collection at the Jacksonville History Center includes this Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph 555 Manual Switchboard formerly used at Florida National Bank, 214 Hogan Street. Mr. Budd retired from Southern Bell where he worked for almost 40 years in the PBX (Private Branch Exchange) division. When the bank upgraded its telephone system in the late 1970s, the company transferred ownership of the switchboard to Mr. Budd on 1/2/80. His family added the switchboard to Budd Collection in May 2026. #904Day #jacksonvillehistorymatters by @jax_history
