Last night, Paris delivered an amazing show to welcome the world.
New York has adopted me for the past three decades, and after watching this unusual opening ceremony, I am proud of my hometown!

Very sad news, so much memories listening to his music…. #davidsanborn by @jazz_kaleidoscope

While many had discovered Brad Mehldau in the early 90s, my first CD from Brad was “the art of the trio volume one” released in 1996 on Warner Bros.
Joining him are Jorge Rossy on drums and Larry Grenadier on bass.
We now know from various interviews and his discography since, that Brad’s influences are divers, the pop of the 60s, the prog-rock of the 70s and 80s, some classical music and Keith Jarrett.
On the art of the trio volume one, Brad has recorded his version of my favorite song from The Beatles: “Blackbird”. I just love this interpretation.

We are in 1976. There is a drought in the Western world that summer, with some of the highest temperatures ever recorded then.
In New York, Stanley Clarke is recording his 4th solo album: “School Days”. In this session, Stanley has invited John McLaughlin and Milt Holland to record “Desert Song”.
Milt is on percussion, John on acoustic guitar and Stanley on double bass.

This morning, I got up to the music of Jimmy Smith.
This is “I got my Mojo workin” remixed by Grand Master Duda who put a modern touch to the 1957 rendition of the tune from Muddy Waters.
With such rhythm, and the sun shining in New York this morning, the day is going to be great!

Experimental mood, dreamy and textured, is what saxophonist Mette Henriette new album is providing.
Recorded in 2022 Norway, her inspiration is hard to define but there is no doubt fellow saxophonist Jan Garbarek music has been playing often in Mette Henriette’s home.
The album is “Drifting” a trio with Henriette on saxophone, Johan Lindvall on piano and Judith Hamann on cello.
The cut is “I Villvind”.

Creed Taylor has produced a lot of gems with his own label CTI.
One of them is “Sky Dive” from Freddie Hubbard recorded in 1972 with an all star lineup.
When I listen to those 50 years old recordings, I am fascinated by the work on the arrangements and orchestration from Don Sebesky. Like Gil Evans with Miles Davis, Hubbard and Sebesky have recorded some landmark music I listen to with great pleasure 50 years later.
Freddie Hubbard - trumpet,Alan Rubin, Marvin Stamm - trumpet, flugelhorn, Wayne Andre, Garnett Brown - trombone, Paul Faulise - bass trombone, Tony Price - tuba, Hubert Laws - flute, alto flute, bass flute, Phil Bodner - flute, alto flute, bass clarinet, piccolo, George Marge - alto clarinet, bass clarinet, Wally Kane - bass clarinet, piccolo, Romeo Penque - flute, alto flute, clarinet, oboe, English horn, Keith Jarrett - piano, electric piano, George Benson - guitar, Ron Carter - bass, Billy Cobham - drums, Ray Barretto, Airto Moreira - percussion, Don Sebesky - arranger, conductor

Last week, out of the blue, the tune “Fickle Funk” from Chick Corea popped in my mind. I did not remember the title, just knew it was from Chick. I hadn’t listen to it for a very very long time. I thought it might have been from the “Elektric Band” and I started to listen to all of them and realized it was earlier and it was even released before “Friends” on the “Secret Agent” album from 1978 on Polydor. 45 years later, this tune has not aged a bit, and I have a great pleasure rediscovering it.
Joe Farrell is on saxophone, Allen Vizzutti on flugelhorn, Bunny Brunel on bass, Airto Moreira on percussion and Chick on electric piano.

After a long hiatus from posting, I am back ;)
Taking advantage of being in Las Vegas for a few days, I went to see U2 at the new SPHERE venue. The experience was so spectacular that I felt compelled to post about it.
Music is such an important part of our lives, jazz and its sub-genres have been my areas of preference but I was not insensitive to the pop and rock of the 1980s, U2, Simply Red, Depeche Mode, etc.
The staying power of bands like the Stones or U2 is rare and a testimony of the quality and meanings their music represent to more than one generation. U2 at the Sphere was an incredible show combining the sound with a visual production of the highest quality.
Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance and sung a couple of tunes with the band. It was two and a half hours of pure delight in a one of a kind venue that seats over 18,000 people without counting those standing around the stage.

We knew of her fragile health in recent times, a pop/rock music icon for over 60 years.
Most of us can attach memories to her music.
