A few weeks ago, guests at Destination D23 were introduced to the one-night only overlay of Typhoon Lagoon themed around Kuzcotopia from The Emperor's New Groove! I was lucky enough to design this event from the ground up, starting with the branding and even more as it expanded into multiple photo ops, park signage, DJ booths, bingo cards, surfboard decals, and so much more! I don't think I have the words to describe how big my smile was as I scrolled through Instagram, watching people enjoy my graphics all around a Disney theme park. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I'd have this opportunity, and I couldn't have done it without my amazing fellow designers and event organizers with @disneyd23. And a big thank you to @peytonisthename and guests from across the internet for letting me live vicariously through your photos! by @jdilldesign
The final piece all together!! Under the name "Wish You Were Here," this was submitted to our internal art show for Disney cast members, and everyone's work turned out so well and super unique. A big thank you to @olgatmosqueda and @monstergram7 for organizing this event, and I hope for more opportunities like this in the future! #disneyland #disneyland70 by @jdilldesign
Swipe for the full piece! This is the iconic Maui statue from the lobby of the Polynesian Resort in Disney World! He was so much fun to draw and I think the scene captures the vibe of the whole hotel. . #disney #waltdisneyworld #wdw #polynesian #cute #art #illustration #graphicdesign #hawaii #maui #tropical #pleaseiwanttogobacktohawaiiitsbeensolong by @jdilldesign
got to illustrate this fun scene for the @disneyd23 Florida shopping event at the @waltdisneyimagineering store, Mickey's of Glendale! if you're a wdw local, go grab your tickets! by @jdilldesign
Our @disney Sketch Club had its third annual Gallery Showcase! This year's theme was centered around friendship, and everyone was assigned a color palette so the art could be arranged in one large rainbow in our commissary. I had the Scarlet palette, and it was a fun challenge to work with a group of colors I usually don't use! My piece is called "A Smile Means Friendship to Everyone," and centers around some of my favorite parts of the "it's a small world" attraction. If you're on campus, I left postcard prints of it below the piece, so please go take one! by @jdilldesign
I couldn’t have put on @disneyparks and @heritageauctions The Disney Experiences Auction by myself, though! While I was able to do the fun illustrations on the front half, it was our whole team coming together to make this experience happen. This was the first wall I created to sell the theme, using a background created by @explorelei that would go on to be on all of the general auction signs, backdrops and collateral! The Hollywood Studios entrance tower on the right, while simple, was a simple way for me to sell the art style that I’d use across my illustrations. This blue background was carried into walls that had looser themes but still needed to feel cohesive, like this one with assorted signs and objects. Each object was about the same size and able to sit on a pedestal, and that unity was individualized to each piece with its related background behind their respective frame. I was lucky enough to give my amazingly supportive family and girlfriend a tour and got a picture with them at the photo op that @studio.birdy designed and developed, who ironically is unfortunately missing from our team photo below. This wall was created by @xmelamo in the wee hours of the morning! All I had concepted was the auction item in the middle and words in medieval writing around it, and she created this amazing background that is reminiscent of the book from the film. Turning right, we find ourselves at the Frontier/Adventure area of @disneyparks and @heritageauctions The Disney Experiences Auction. Aside from the Tower of Terror wall, this section was one of my favorites to work on because of how cohesively it is able to transition between different themes in the same area. This is how the area looked once guests arrived. Beginning on the left side, we start with a look at a custom Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction bench with the peaks of Big Thunder Mountain behind the trees. This area was meant to reflect the environment of Frontierland and the Big Thunder Ranch area instead of focusing on a singular icon so the objects could blend into the space, which is why objects like the Big Thunder Ranch sign became incorporated into the top of a gate. The section is flanked by greenery that helps to contain each theme in its own slot on the wall while still providing smooth transitions between areas. A look down the Frontierland wall. We continue to the next section with tropical plants and a tree trunk in the background that works with the Wilderness Lodge trash can to create a natural divider. The next section shows the outdoor pool bar at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, complete with a bar table, chairs, and the pool’s iconic volcano slide peeking over the thatched bar roof. Our next greenery transition takes us to the “dead” center wall that’s meant to have bricks like those in an ancient temple. This skeleton from Indiana Jones Adventure in the fetal position became a running joke on our team. Another look at the transition area with the bamboo plant. These large items take a good amount of space on the wall, so we wanted to leave room in the background for them to breathe and be seen. The area ends on a corner with a plant to mask the sharp ending of the wall. Around the corner, though, I added an Easter egg referencing the infamous on-again-off-again pole in the Indiana Jones Adventure ride queue at Disneyland. I threw this in for fun and definitely didn’t think it would get approved, especially because at the time it was removed from the queue, but they ended up like the idea! Doing a 180 takes us to the next wall of @disneyparks and @heritageauctions The Disney Experiences Auction, with a section that collectively sold for over $200,000! Kermit here went for over half that price, but let’s take a look at the space that inspired these high rollers. This section is inspired by the backside of Muppet*Vision 3D, the recently closed fan-favorite attraction that these items are from. While they once hung in the theater for people to see, they’re now out back of Rizzo’s Props Department before they’re auctioned to their next home. The middle of this display was once meant to show the inside of the theater, but was adapted to peer out to the Kermit clock that sat outside the land’s store. The display is capped with a Miss Piggy ornamentation and graffiti that only Animal would dare spray on the beloved theater. A closer look at the 3D glasses box. If the clock’s hand lengths were swapped, the time would read 6:08, a nod to the attraction’s closure on June 8, 2025. A look down the line of the wall. A closer look at the Miss Piggy ornamentation. Me in front of the wall! We’ll go over it in another post, but the perpendicular wall has one of the towers of the entrance of Hollywood Studios to signify a transition to the specific park from the generic Walt Disney World sign wall. Here are layout sketches and references! The center part of the wall changed pretty late into the process, so creating it was a bit of improvising and adapting the story I wanted to tell with it. Overall, I still think people enjoyed it and were glad to see these in person one more time! by @jdilldesign
That’s a wrap on my first D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and I’m excited to say my team and I had the privilege of working with our partners at @disneyparks and @heritageauctions to curate and create the first iteration of The Disney Experiences Auction — Rare and Remarkable Finds! This space put items in situe that were able to be bid on by fans attending the convention, and while there’s too much for one post, I’ll start with showing off the opening walls! The space begins with a glimpse into the Haunted Mansion, showing off items on a backdrop inspired by the attraction’s iconic wallpaper covered with a ghostly fog. We then turn to find items from Disney California Adventure’s Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. The backdrop begins with the former attraction’s front gates with lamppost ornaments adorning the center. As we continue into the room, the background transitions to the hotel’s abandoned lobby, which is flanked by bookshelves, complete with a table, chair and giant lamp available for bid. I did this year's @disneyd23 window design in the security corridor at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa! So excited people get to see this along with @monstergram7's character art as they transition between the hotel and Downtown Disney. by @jdilldesign
