✴️VANTAGE POINT✴️

SOME RODS IMPRESS YOU. A FEW KEEP GIVING YOU REASONS TO PAY ATTENTION.

That’s why I waited this long to write about the DESIGNO Vantage DV7-C71HRS4 Avant.

I’ve had this particular Designo in my hands for well over six years now. That’s more than long enough to get past the initial investment, the rarity, the boutique mystique and all the other things that can sometimes make an expensive JDM rod seem more impressive than it really is.

I noticed the taper is a bit slower than expected, but the blank’s recovery is much quicker than that taper suggests. It carries serious power, but it doesn’t behave like a blunt instrument. And the more time you spend with it, the less useful the usual words—fast, lightweight, sensitive—start to become.

And that’s where things got interesting.

Thousands of casts later, I’ve dragged jigs through and over chunk rock, worked free rigs uphill in the wind, fished Texas rigs in and around cover, leaned into big fish at distance and dealt with more than a few close-range situations that tend to expose whether a “powerful” rod is actually well designed or just a meat-stick.

Some rods get easier to explain with time. This one got much more interesting.

The full review digs into taper versus recovery, power versus stiffness, sensitivity versus usable information, and a few fish that revealed more about this blank than any spec sheet ever could.

No parking lot or backyard casting-distance verdicts. No short-term honeymoon write-up.

Just six-plus years with one genuinely distinctive, incredibly well-built and very capable rod.

The full DESIGNO Vantage DV7-C71HRS4 Avant review is now live on JDMFishing.com.

THE GREAT TACKLE DIVIDE

Anglers. Enthusiasts. Collectors.

Three words that should respectfully coexist within fishing…yet somehow continue to cause conflict.

Especially when one of those words is “Collector”.

You’ve probably heard the criticisms:

“Why buy it if you’re never going to fish it?”

“Collectors just drive up prices.”

“Tackle is a tool, it’s not for display.”

The truth is, those arguments often come from ego—or from an unwillingness to understand that people can and do value tackle differently.

The angler judges tackle by its performance.

The enthusiast understands what makes it special—its design, engineering, evolution and the people behind it.

The collector values its history, craftsmanship, uniqueness, rarity and the story it tells.

Those aren’t competing identities.

They’re complementary.

And I’m all three.

I’ve spent decades fishing this gear, researching it, collecting it and documenting the stories behind it. The deeper you go, the more you realize great tackle can be about far more than simply catching fish.

Collectors are often criticized for preserving equipment instead of using it. But the problem isn’t collecting, it’s when collecting turns into speculation, flipping, manufactured scarcity or clout-chasing. Too often, those behaviors get lumped together with genuine collecting.

They’re not the same.

True collectors preserve history. They save paperwork, document variations, protect rare tackle, preserve complete sets and keep stories alive long after companies, designers and products disappear.

Without anglers, great tackle is never proven.

Without enthusiasts, we stop pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Without collectors, the stories, history and legacy are eventually lost.

Fishing is big enough for every one of these perspectives.

The real divide isn’t between anglers and collectors.

It’s between those who genuinely care about the culture…and those who only care about being seen within it.

So which are you: angler, enthusiast, collector—or some combination of the three?

The full article is coming to JDMFishing.com for a much deeper dive.

👂🏻Can You Hear It?👂🏻

The Language of Great Rod Design

Most discussions about high-end rods begin with the blank, sensitivity, and guide train.

But before you ever set the hook, your hand has already spent quality time with the handle assembly — where a lot of the engineering happens.

Grip lengths, materials and contours. Reel seat design. Trigger shape. Fore nut. Balance point. Each one decides how a rod interacts with your hand, what’s telegraphed up the line, and how much leverage you get on the hookset. A deep, contoured seat like the Fuji PTS on a Luxxe Oltre or Yamaga Blanks Acroba locks the reel in low for a natural flow of hand to rod to reel. A Designo DRCS, with its smaller sculpted trigger, trades leverage for some of the most beautifully placed finger contours I’ve fished. Neither is better — just different answers to the same question, and personal preference plays a role.

The finest designers spend years refining these details for one reason: so the rod disappears in your hand and becomes an extension of your arm.

Some designs become industry standards. Others — like Megabass’ unconventional “Sensitive Metal Frame Seat” (aka the Itō Touch Seat) on early ARMS Complete rods — become cult classics precisely because they refused to follow the standard.

What fascinates me about the Japanese market is how many approaches exist within the grip section alone. Different designers chase performance in wildly different ways — a culmination of parts transitioning into the blank, yet each one a specific answer landed on after rejecting many others.

And if you’re listening, the handle tells you what the rod is — and isn’t capable of. Manufacturers tell you what a rod is good at. The handle tells you the truth, whether or not it matches the marketing. Nothing about a good handle is accidental — the strengths are on purpose, tradeoffs too. Be quiet enough to hear which is which.

This is why I stay this deep in high-end JDM tackle. Not just appreciating the finest rods ever built — understanding the argument each one is making, and why it often wins.

🧠Spooled Up🧠

With so many spool options out there, how do you know which ones are performance upgrades and which ones are hype?

Understanding why different spools exist is more important than most anglers realize.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the tuning world is that a lighter spool automatically casts farther.

It doesn’t.

What it does do is require less energy to start rotating, which is why spool weight is only one part of the equation when it comes to performance.

Diameter, wall thickness, material, line capacity, porting, braking systems and, perhaps most importantly, where spool weight is distributed all influence how a reel behaves on the cast.

Choosing the right bearings, keeping them properly cleaned and lubricated, and in some cases, tuning the inductor can further optimize a reel’s performance for everything from BFS to swimbaits.

Once you understand these principles, you’ll stop looking at OEM and aftermarket spools the same way. You stop chasing the lightest spool and start choosing the right spool for the job.

What’s your favorite spool you’ve ever fished…OEM or aftermarket?

🖤Are You an Enthusiast?🖤

What makes someone a tackle enthusiast?

It isn’t measured by how many fish you catch.

And most of us already know that owning elite tackle doesn’t mean you’ll catch more fish.

It certainly isn’t about chasing social media hype or clout.

It’s about understanding the differences between two rods that share nearly identical specs.

It’s about knowing which spools work best in certain reels for certain techniques…and more importantly, why.

A tackle enthusiast obsesses over the details.

We research obscure tackle late into the night while everyone else is asleep.

We compare specs most people will never care about.

We appreciate the convergence of form and function.

We hunt down rare, discontinued gear for days, months…and sometimes years.

We debate rod tapers, blank construction, solid-tip implementation, spool weights, startup inertia, braking profiles, gear materials, tuning techniques, and bearing oils like other people debate politics.

Sometimes we spend more time talking about tackle than actually fishing…

And we’re perfectly okay with that.

Because elite tackle has always been about more than simply catching fish.

It’s about…

Engineering.
Refinement.
Performance.
Innovation.
Craftsmanship.
Heritage.
Art.

It’s about elevating every moment on the water with some of the finest tackle ever created.

Some people will never understand that level of obsession.

And that’s okay.

This page was never built for everyone.

It was built for the anglers who appreciate the details everyone else overlooks.

The enthusiasts.
The collectors.
The tuners.
The historians.
The gear junkies.
The obsessives.
The ones who understand.

Welcome to the dark side.

♟️Not A Pawn ♟️

@raidjapan_official introduced the Maximum series back in 2020, releasing only a few models at the time, with one in particular quickly becoming a permanent fixture in the lineup. Since then, more models have followed, including a couple more gems that have found a permanent home in the stable. That said, one continues to stand out. The full writeup is live at jdmfishing.com, so go check it out.

A ton of new articles and fresh content are on the way. Stay tuned.

⚙️REVISED⚙️

One of my favorites I built some years back…this @abugarcia_fishing 2500c is far from stock and features a plethora aftermarket parts. From @simonshimomura side plates and gears, to @valleyhill_official, @avail_fishing_official and @studiocomposite.jp...she’s built to the hilt and easily one of the finest casting machines in existence. IYKYK.

🔋MAXX POWER🔋

After spending lots of time with 4 of the new @raidjapan_official Maximum series models over the past few years…There’s definitely a couple that stand out from the crowd and one in particular that has won my heart. Swipe left ⬅️…

A full writeup will be published at jdmfishing.com in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, head over to tackleporn.com and jump into the “RAID-ing” thread for a little hint at which one has earned a permanent spot in the lineup - even making me buy a second one. And remember…things aren’t always what they seem. 🤔

🧚If you have to…🧚

If UL-L rated finesse spinning gear is a must, you might as well do it right.

The extremely rare, highly regarded and sought after @daiwa_japan X Rodio Craft-tuned 12 Exist 2004 is a prime example of this. Multiple refinements, including IOS drag and roller upgrades, no Mag-Sealed bearings, Rodio Craft CF handle, a spare spool, and much more make for a buttery smooth eggbeater experience. This is spinning gear done right.
