POSTS STORIES REELS
Happy Halloween! What's the oldest, spookiest thing you strolled past today? Once you start noticing public relics, it's hard to stop. There's so much history in the places nobody looks. When flint strikes metal, tiny fragments break away, react with oxygen, and ignite into sparks. That's how I think about my art. This one started with a bundle of old Scientific American issues I found on a stoop in Brooklyn. I take fragments of images like these out of context and put them next to things they were never meant to meet. Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes sparks. And that's only half the story. When you look at one of my boards, you bring your own memories and feelings to it. You become the oxygen. Curiosity is connection. As a musician, I can't help hearing what a picture is asking for. These wanted something warmer, with a bit of rhythm to it. Everything in here started as a photo from somewhere different. Put them in a row and they start talking to each other. Curiosity is connection. Jeff Yas by @jeff.yas
Sixteen boards. Each one began as a photo of something I almost walked past. Some I took without knowing why. A few I probably could have left on the sidewalk. I'm glad I didn't. Curiosity is connection. Which one would you have stopped for? Jeff Yas by @jeff.yas
My dad was born in Montreal and my citizenship papers arrived today after a long process! Feeling grateful to the Canadian government and the kind people at the immigration and citizenship ministries. I promise to work on my French just a little bit. by @jeff.yas
Why did this color feel right? Why am I drawn to this texture? Why does this pattern keep coming back? This is the third piece in FLINT, my ongoing mosaic series, and it's less about the work itself and more about the questions behind it. I don't always know what I'm making. Some days I'm just trying to be observant, down to the smallest detail, and I've learned not to mind not having the answers. A color reaches out. A pattern pulls me in. A snippet of a magazine catches my eye. I don't always know why, I just follow it and see where the piece takes shape. Curiosity is connection. How does it connect you? This is part of FLINT. Six moments, six different pieces, six different spaces. Each one changes on its own, but together they start to feel like the same idea, just told a different way each time. Curiosity is connection. Jeff Yas by @jeff.yas
What if how something is made matters, even when no one else can see it? I could download a texture online in ten seconds. Instead, I took my curiosity for a walk, looking for leaves. No two greens are exactly the same in nature. I brought a few home, pressed them in a book that felt right, and waited. Once they were dry, I scanned them, and saw things I couldn't have seen before. You might never know it started as a leaf. But I know it's there. And somehow, that matters. Curiosity is connection. Jeff Yas #mosaicart #creativeprocess #visualart #texture #curiosity by @jeff.yas
This is part of FLINT. Six pieces, same room, same light. Each one starts as something ordinary, a leaf, a torn scrap, a wall's texture, before it's taken apart and rebuilt into this. Only the piece changes. That's enough to change everything else. Curiosity is connection. Jeff Yas #mosaicart #mixedmediaart #flintseries by @jeff.yas
Are you curious about everything? I used to think that meant I was easily distracted. Now I think it just means looking closely enough to find the connections. I've always collected things, shapes, patterns, old paper, fragments of type. Things most people walk past. For years they felt separate. Now they're becoming one story. Every board starts the same way: I sketch, gather, scan, paint, rearrange, not because I know where it's going, but because I trust the connections will show up if I keep looking.
