The big reveal of our latest stroke of color is just around the corner! by @jeffsheltonarchitect

We added bird apartments where the corners meet on the El Andaluz roof. Karl Swanson figured out how to create them from Jeff’s pencil sketches.

Nothing like a cozy nook with plenty of soft cushions near sunny windows for reading, snuggling, and sleeping, seen here at the Oak Tree House, La Roca, and the Bridge House.

Many thanks to Tiana Molony and @latimes for the great article in today’s Travel Section! It focuses on the downtown Santa Barbara buildings and includes an interactive Walking Tour map. (link in bio) by @jeffsheltonarchitect

“Somehow, we obtained approval to cover one of the back units with ceramic plates. We originally proposed that the plates go on the front units that face Cota Street, but the Review Committee couldn’t quite sign off on that idea. However, they did approve the plates for the unit on the back alley. Often in the backs of buildings, you will see interesting ideas that didn’t make the Review Board cut.”

Tile designs usually begin as pencil on paper. From there, a pencil sketch gets photocopied, rotated, and taped up on the wall to see how multiple tiles interact. Once the final composition is ready, the final drawing gets digitized (“don’t straighten out a single wavy line!”), and eventually sent to the tile makers. Encaustic cement tiles are made by bending small flexible pieces of metal into the shape of the design, creating a mold for the pigmented cement mixture to be poured into. Each finished tile has been poured by hand and set with pressure, never being fired with heat like ceramic and porcelain tiles are. The result is unique, detailed, and made by hand.

Benches are an important part of any project. They provide a place for pedestrians to slow down, take a seat, and be refreshed.
