Oh to be a ducky enjoying the gentle rain in a lotus pond 🦆 I had a lot of fun drawing this piece! I feel like I don't normally draw close-ups of animals like this so it was a lot of fun and a nice change of pace! #illustration #drawing #duck #digitalart by @jelarts

A bear and his magical fish friends ✨ here's the print of the month! I had a lot of fun drawing the shiny fish! #Illustrator #digitalart #painting #procreateart by @jelarts

The vision, the process, the result 🐔✨ for this piece, I took a quick thumbnail sketch that I made with markers, scanned it, then painted over it digitally for hours until I was satisfied! Sometimes it's fun to make art this way, without really planning anything too hard and just painting over one tiny idea #illustration #painting #chicken #artist by @jelarts

It's chicken time! Here's a bunch of chicken sketches I made in my sketchbook, scanned and collaged together for your enjoyment ✨ I also added some pale blue backgrounds digitally to add a little interest to this page. For the chickens, I used my trusty caran d'ache neocolours and pencil crayon here and there! #sketchbook #chickens #neocolour #pastels by @jelarts

A little barn owl study with pencil crayon! I'm so happy that fall is here 🍂 #sketchbook #drawing #illustration by @jelarts

Swipe to zoom out 🦉🍂 Here's my latest illustration for the September mail club! I sure had a time drawing Owls - they challenged me a lot but I think I pulled it together in the end! #owl #autumn #illustration by @jelarts

A little fall sketch collage for September! For some reason I found the owls extremely difficult to draw. Not shown here are tons of owl sketches - pages and pages and layers of trying to decide what pose, what species, how detailed, how simplified, what colours, etc. I found myself overthinking everything and getting caught up with their anatomy being "just right". Sometimes I forget that I'm allowed to simplify and draw things however I want, even while still maintaining a sense of realism. But, it's a difficult balance to achieve! When I focus on getting things too correct, everything becomes stiff. It's hard to let loose as an artist when you're too concerned about accuracy. But if I'm not concerned enough, I'm worried I'll make mistakes that I won't catch until I'm too far into the process.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy September's mail club - better late than never!

I decided to draw otters for August! It's been too long since I've painted these guys. This one was fun but also quite challenging! It's always tricky painting underwater scenes because there's so much involved in making water look convincing (especially with more stylized work). I also couldn't decide if it should be dark or light behind the otter, so I settled on a compromise where the crab still had a little bit of light behind it to make him stand out. I think the most fun I had during this piece was painting the lush green swirly grass! I added lots of extra swoops near the end and it really pulled it all together, I think. #painting #digitalart #painting by @jelarts

OTTERS! I had so much fun drawing these guys! I used alcohol markers for the first time in basically 13 years. It was really interesting to see how they translated to my current style! I was definitely rusty but I figured it out in the end! I also added pencil crayon on top for finishing touches. Video coming soon! #alcoholmarkers #sketches #sketchbook #otters by @jelarts

Throwback to this fall bat I drew last year 🦇 it's still one of my favourite recent prints I've made. I'm already thinking about fall and July isn't even over yet! #illustration #digitalartist #procreateart by @jelarts
