Which of these 7 seaweeds have you tried?

🌿 DULSE is a thicker brownish variety of red seaweed that is known for its 'bacon-like' flavor when fried. It can be used raw, steamed, fried, or used to make a flavorful broth.

🌿 OGO is crisp, light, salty, and often the star of Hawaiian poke dishes. It’s wonderful when served raw in salads, in cold broths, with shellfish, and with ceviches or sushi, but can also be steamed, used in cold infusions, and jellified for pastries!

🌿 SEA LETTUCE boasts a delicate sheet like structure and bright emerald green color, adding a clean crisp taste. It can be used to wrap fish, added to salads or soups, and can even be used in cocktails.

🌿 SEA GRAPES have a thin skin that pops to release a viscous sugary and salty brine. They are a true delicacy of the sea and are great as a garnish to complement sweet or savory flavors, add color, or texture to a variety of dishes.

🌿 WAKAME has a briny, salty, umami flavor, with a degree of sweetness as well. It’s delicious in soups, salads, and rehydrates incredibly well.

🌿 VELVET HORN has a soft, velvety chew with an earthy texture. Best fresh or braised … a little goes a long way. You can make delicious tempura with it.

🌿 BULL KELP has various parts—tender bulbs, stipes (stems), and blades (leaves). The bulbs and stipes, for example, can be pickled, while the blades can be dried into chips and added to soups and other meals.

Kelp and seaweed are often used interchangeably, but there is indeed a difference!

Kelp is a TYPE of seaweed. In other words, kelp is seaweed, but not all seaweeds are kelp.

Ever wondered where a kelp farm begins? In coastal Alaska, it starts with seed, and Native communities are growing their own!

Every kelp farm needs seed, and remote coastal communities can have a bit of a tough time getting it.

@NativeConservancy’s Community Kelp Seed Nursery (CKSN) program is returning seed cultivation to Indigenous hands.

The nurseries are mobile and built for remote places, so communities can grow their own kelp seed, build local mariculture expertise, and maintain year-round blue-green jobs for Indigenous youth and workers who run the nurseries.

Of all the adventures we shared, somehow this photo of us dressed as beekeepers feels just right. Two women, curious about the world, always ready to learn something new, laugh a little too loudly, and find joy in the most unexpected places. 🐝❤️

Yesterday, I lost my beautiful friend Renee. My sister, my Twinkie, my confidante, and one of the greatest gifts this life has ever given me. She was just 57.

We first met over a salmon. 🐟 Yes, a salmon. And from that unlikely beginning grew a friendship that would carry me through some of the happiest moments of my life and some of the darkest.

Renee was extraordinary. Brilliant, fiercely principled, endlessly curious, and so full of love. She believed in protecting this planet and every living thing that calls it home. But more than anything, she loved her family. Darrell and their wonderful son were her world.

She had this remarkable gift of making everyone around her better. She certainly made me better. She loved me through moments when I struggled to love myself. She showed up, again and again, with wisdom, laughter, honesty and the kind of loyalty that only comes along a few times in a lifetime.

I still can’t quite believe she’s gone.

But when I look at this photograph, I don’t see loss. I see adventure. Friendship. Wonder. Two women who knew that life was meant to be lived, not simply observed.

And perhaps that’s what I want to remember most.

If you knew Renee, honor her by living the way she did. Live with passion. Love fiercely. Stay curious. Stand up for what is right. Make a difference. And say yes to the adventure.

Even if it means putting on a beekeeper suit and seeing where the day takes you.

Oh, my beautiful Twinkie. How lucky I was to find you in this great big world. I would give anything for one more adventure, one more laugh, one more hug.

I will carry you with me on every adventure still to come.

I love you, Renee. Always. 🐝💛 by @jen_bushman

How can we reach MORE brilliant minds (especially students!) and invite them to pursue exciting careers in the sustainable blue economy?

Events like last week’s Blue Hour at @AltaSea help make this happen!

This gathering of diverse professionals celebrated the innovations happening on the water, including in responsible seafood.

LA educator @CharisseSims notes, “Beyond the incredible culinary experiences, what stood out most was AltaSea’s commitment to education and expanding opportunities for young people.

Through its Ocean STEM programs, students gain exposure to science, technology, environmental sustainability, and career pathways within the growing Blue Economy.

As educators, we know that exposure creates opportunity. Our students cannot pursue possibilities they don’t know exist, and programs like these help bridge that gap.”

It turns out the kids are MORE than alright!

They’re super eager to learn about environmental education and how they can take action in their local communities, especially through their food choices.

Dr. Kelley Le of @GradesOfGreen and Jennifer Rothman of @YellowFarmhouseCT shared what they’re witnessing firsthand through their roles as leaders in educational nonprofits on the 𝗙𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗕𝗟𝗨𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗗𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗧.

Whether you’re an educator, a parent, a student, or someone who cares about the health of our planet and our youth, this conversation shows how we can connect the dots between environmental science and culinary arts in the classroom!

Level up your 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗦 by baking them with dulse, a delicious (and nutritious!) type of 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗗 that makes these treats even more decadent.

The dulse adds a deep richness that even cocoa alone cannot achieve!

As Chef @BartonSeaver writes in 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘽𝙇𝙐𝙀 𝙁𝙊𝙊𝘿 𝘾𝙊𝙊𝙆𝘽𝙊𝙊𝙆, “The dessert recipes included here are not gimmicks, nor do they include seafood just because. They are interesting culinary compositions in and of themselves.”

The recipe for these 𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗣 𝗗𝗨𝗟𝗦𝗘 𝗕𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗦 is on page 209—the perfect dessert for “trick-or-treaters” of all ages!

Have you ever had an internship or educational experience where you realized the potential impact you could have on the world?

We’re honored to be a partner of @DukeEnvironment and to have played a role in @Lululoucheim incredible summer in Iceland where she learned that her research would have a real influence on blue foods!

“@Jen_Bushman, [Executive Director & Co-founder of Fed by Blue], has deep connections across the Blue Economy, and she took the time to understand my career interests and connect me with the right people,” she recently shared. “The Iceland Ocean Cluster @sjavarklasinn was one of those connections.”
