In May of this year, I was blessed with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how the prison system in Belize operates, specifically the Wagner’s Youth Facility. I must admit, while I was somewhat a deer in headlights, I was open minded and ready to learn. My goal was always to gain true insight without being judgmental.

What I learnt, was the obvious. We were dealing with young teenage boys who needed love and attention. They were lacking in proper guidance and discipline, and some in education. Some were abused physically, mentally, sexually and verbally. Some never had support of family and friends; things that we take for granted everyday.

Myself, Ms. Kendra Hoyt, along with the Directors/Facilitators of the WYF simply want to see change and have been working towards that through educational programs and rehabilitation. But change doesn’t happen over night. It takes consistency and doing action. While working with the youths, I showed them the importance of being true to self, respectful (especially towards women) and remaining positive when faced with life obstacles. I introduced programs such as expressive arts as a form of therapy and refocusing energy.

I am so thankful for Digi, who agreed to be a part of my initiative for Change and Hope for our young people. We have all made mistakes and deserve second chances. I believe that giving these youths the proper structure and support will lead them to become productive citizens in our society. Which is why, I prepared 40 care packages with basic necessities that some may be lacking (they were so happy and appreciative of something so simple). This is to encourage them to keep doing their best and right their wrongs! Digi also provided WYF with free speed net for them to be able to continue with their educational programs while they are there. The reality is, some boys entered the system not being able to read nor write, but with the help of the Kolbe Prison, there is progress and growth and online schooling!
With the help of our communities, I hope to see this become an annual “gift of hope.” We want a better country, but what are we doing to make the change? It starts from YOU! 💜🙏🏾 by @jenellifraser

As part of the “Adopting a Classroom” project, a donation for the fourteen students were made today which included: face masks, face shields, hand sanitizers, packed school bags, and refurbished chairs. While online schooling for primary school starts on Monday, eventually they will be back in the classroom. When that happens, they will be equipped and ready 😊🙏🏾

P.S. updated pictures of the renovated classroom coming soon 🙈

Happy World Oceans Day! 🌎🌊

Now more than ever, we must protect and preserve our oceans so they can continue to sustain us for generations to come. The ocean is mighty, yet nurturing; providing us with food, livelihoods, recreation, and countless other benefits that support life on Earth.

Today, our oceans and marine life are at risk from pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, and overexploitation. As we celebrate World Oceans Day, let us remember that every action matters. Together, we can help protect marine ecosystems and ensure our oceans remain healthy, resilient, and thriving.

The ocean gives us so much. It’s time we give back.
